However, with 1" of tire between wheel and ground PLUS dropped to the floor, it has to ride like a dump truck. Besides, your car wouldn't last a day in my town without serious damage (starting with my garage); you're lucky you can ride it like that where you live.
I am curious, is this something a friend told you, or something you have experienced yourself with HREs on an SC430 with a Tein CS coilover suspension?
And why would you assume the wheels are less 'strong' then the OE cast wheels? Granted, the lower-profile tires offer less protection from road hazards, but the HREs utilize 6061-T6 heat-treated rim components and are much better quality than the cast crap Lexus equips the car with (which are made by the lowest bidder).
As far as ride quality is concerned, the OE run-flat tires are notoriously hard-riding, due to their stiff sidewalls- remember, they must be able to support the cars' weight with ZERO air pressure. The Covette guys call them "run-crap" tires, and switch to a conventional radial tire upon wearing out their OE tires. In fact, GM did away with the run-flat tires on the Z06 in the interest of increasing ultimate grip and performance.
Some of the ride quality characteristics are deterined by the weight and rotaing mass of the wheel. The HREs are very good in both of these respects, so if you have had a bad experience with a 45 lb. 20" cast aluminum wheel, this is not a fair comparison to a 26 lb. forged aluminum wheel.
BTW, I can speak from experience on this topic- I drive daily on a set of 20" HREs (100 miles per day).
My Mechanical Engineering background is a solid basis for my scientific knowledge about the subject, too.
Why don't we ask Peter- how's the ride, Peter?
(Car looks fantastic, by the way!!)

I'd have to agree a bit here, my SC430 w/19" Maya TS 2-piece wheels seem (subjective here) to have a significantly better ride than the new SC430s I drove with runflats. These wheels are about 12lbs lighter each, and shaving 50lbs off the car straight off the bat is a good start! The Tein CS coilover kit will be the next addition!
