No problems with melting. If you're lazy, you can take the sidmarker to a plastics fabricator and have them turn out a perfect clear cover with any type of plastic you want for probably $10-15 each. If you're local to the Bay Area, I know of TAP Plastics in Dublin that will do it. I just cut mine with a band saw and trimmed it with regular scissors. Took two tries.

This is the only pic I have. It's overexposed for effect, so the brightness is not accurate...

i have a question. if we chose to perform this "clearing sidemarkers" diy modification. do we have to buy an amber bulb? are there laws against us using white LED bulbs? or just like *****************, using white for parking lights, and amber for signaling. thanks guys!

In CA, technically they have to be orange, but it's one of those laws that no cop knows/cares about. I've interchanged blue, white, and orange bulbs and never had any problems with the law. I stuck with orange because it looked best.

BTW, since the last post, I went to TAP and had them fab new clear covers out of a 1mm-thick polycarbonate plastic. They are much more durable than the CD case plastic; not as brittle and won't scratch or swirl easy. Cost was $7/pair.

I decided to take some pics this evening. These are more accurate depictions of how they look now...

Again, this costs you no more than $20 in materials...

Home Depot doesn't have transparent plastic like this, only the textured translucent stuff. If you want the crystal clear stuff, you have to go to a plastics fabricator like TAP, or you can just use the clear cover of a CD case. The TAP plastic is better though.

I'm going to pick up chrome-orange sidemarker bulbs to complete the look.

Here's what the Home Depot stuff looks like by comparison...
