Default Radio Tweaks

Yesterday it was raining in Atlanta, so I decided to do some garage work...also got the wood grain I ordered off of Ebay. About a year ago I had my airbag replaced and later discovered a hairline crack in the woodgrain...actually there were two, I didn't see the other. There was also a rattle...that came because the 2 snaps holding the airvent in place had either been broken, or were broken. Well, I replaced the woodgrain in about 3 minutes, and decided to cut out two strips to put along side my radio work I did a couple of years ago. I have included pics. It looks nice. I have some woodgrain left over if you want to do yours. Just PM me and I will send it to you...with one condition, that you agree to send it to someone else who might want to do the same thing. I used a dremel drill to cut and sand the piece down. I would suggest these tools, but I suspect you can use others. It isn't perfect, but it looks a lot better than it did. I have included a picture of the woodgrain I used...you can see that I didn't use much of it.

By the way, I might add here... That I used monkey glue and 4 clamps (2 each) to fasten the woodgrain to the black plastic that was used from the installation kit. I cut the pieces of wood to match those pieces of plastic.

Does the steering wheel control works with your head unit?

Well, it does, but I don't use it. It seems at times it has a mind of its own and decides to lower the volume on the back speakers. So, I just decided to use the volume on the radio and not the steering wheel. Now having said that, in theory, it is supposed to work...and might, but I stopped using it.

I did the Beatsonic install and my steering wheel volume works. However, it only controls the amp, not the head. The downside to that is that it also turns down your bluetooth phone volume too so I don't really use my steering wheel controls.

Default My Turn

Moondog sent me his leftover piece of woodgrain so I could do my radio as well. Thought I would post some pics of my progress. (It's a very rainy day in SC today) I will post pics of the finished product later today hopefully.

Good ol' blue masking tape to protect the wood during surgery.

Drawing the rough outline

Used the Rockwell to cut out the piece

Used a burr tool on the Dremel to take off the reinforcement ribs on the back

Found some dense black closed cell foam in the shop. Cut to size and split in half because it was too thick

Gorilla glued the foam backing to the edge-sanded pieces.

Well, the wood turned out fairly well. I also used some black upholstery material and tried to cover the little silver piece which still needs some work. I don't care for that rough edge look.

Close... Just need to fix that rough edge...
