New SC430 Owner Repair Thread
Hello everyone!
This is my formal introduction although I already jumped right into some different maintenance threads.
I purchased a nice blue 2002 with 63k miles. She is in pretty good shape and the second owner purchased her with 7k miles.
She has some of the typical issues,
Power antenna, replaced
Blown speakers, currently working
Missing floormats, replaced
Missing keys, replaced
All fluids, replaced
Navi Screen will not close, currently working on it.
Cup holder and ashtray lid were not functioning properly, adjusted/cleaned both.
Missing one of two under engine covers, replaced.
Installed K&N air filter
Replaced cabin air filter
I certainly look forward to conversing with many of you in the future!

Thank you all for the kind welcome!!! The SC is my wife's car and the 2000 Pontiac Trans Am is my toy.
I really enjoy both cars and they each have a unique personality.
The SC has a very refined flavor of classy looks, performance and handling where the T/A has a nice look but also has a raw brut force performance that just SCREAMs when you drop the hammer!

Timing belt needs to be replaced at 90K or 6 or 7 years (sorry I can't remember which one). Remember you have an interference motor so if the belt slips or breaks you have a very expensive repair coming. In my opinion this is not one to take a change with.

The thing I have issue with is not the mileage but the time. 10+ years ago you never saw time as a change interval, only mileage. Why is that?
Back in the 1980s they recommended changing the timing belts at 75k miles. Ask yourself, why is it now 90k or 100k miles. Perhaps, Improvements due to technology!
How is it that belt technology has improved to allow higher milage change intervals but somehow that caused the belt to fall apart after 7 few years?

Those are great questions. I'm in the same position, 2004 with 33K. Looking at the motor and the Serp belt, looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I am going to get the Sewell Kit and have it replaced this summer.

Get the Aisin TKT-021 kit from Amazon. $183.73 (out of stock right now but I am sure they will have some more soon) This kit has more stuff than the Sewell kit and is the same parts. Toyota owns 23% of Aisin. If you look at a number of your components under the hood, you will see Aisin on them. Just like you see Denso on others. I just had mine done with this kit and I had the shop save the old parts. I could not tell them apart.
