Wow.....dude why not just go the BFI route? There is literally hundreds of pages of info on this very easy DIY and from what I've read this is the best way to go in regards to intake.u could use that shiny metal tape they use for duct work it would look a lot better...what is that medical tape lol +1 for originality lol

My original set up was an SRT intake which looked nice and performed good, but the aluminum pipes got very, very hot. So I wrapped the intake with DEI header wrap to cool the intake. I know I went overboard using about 4 layers. That's why it looks so bulky. I also tried the metal duct tape but that looked even worse.

My understanding is that per 10 degrees of heat reduces HP by about 1. I used an infrared heat laser and my intake was almost 200 degrees. Now the temps are less than half.

Wouldn't the heated up pipe warm up the air and potentially reduce HP? I also insulated the heat shield since it got burning hot.

I also put a velocity stack with 6" inlet, makes a little bit different sound.

Does all this work make a difference? I cannot really tell honestly...

I'm also thinking about running a tube from grill to (where the cool air blows into the car while driving) into the heat shield area to cool it off.

the only way your going to get any thing from this MOD is to get COLD AIR into the stock air box. otherwise don't waist your money to hear noise. you will louse hp with these bull sh-- system. you read about. a good filter will do more then these systems. this is a fact. just put ice in the stock box with good filter you will feel a difference COLD AIR.

Most ugliest? probably not but it definlity isn't purdy!
If you want to put a prom dress on it might I suggest a flexible dryer exhaust line painted black and cut down the side to "snap" it on. One little tug and it comes right off (just like the perfect prom dress!)

Nice comment about the prom dress. lol.

I actually did try the flexible air duct dryer line, but I used 4" diameter and it wasn't big enough.
I'd have to go 6" to cover this thing, and it would def look worse.

My plan is to coat it with another layer of silicon DEI spray, which is specifically designed for header wrap. Then at least the paint will be consistent.

I'm pretty much fully insulated from heat now... albeit an ugly duckling lol

Yeah I believe you totally, It's just that I am running the SRT intake and didn't know this inforation when I had it installed. I also like the sound and do not want to go back to stock.

Since it gets really burning hot, I wanted to cool it down as much as possible. I don't know if my efforts produce any results, but it sure is fun.

Agreed. Cold air intake designs that run across the manifold and thermostat housing are crap. The pipe is metal and gets heated up. So that's why I insulated the aluminum SRT intake, that is, all other things constant, the (ugly) insulated pipe should be less hot than the (pretty) non-insulated pipe..

I need to stop worrying about this and get my headers done, as we discussed, so I can get some actual results...

The problem is...where the cold air is, there's the possibility
of water ( hitting a puddle, driving through standing water )
and you don't want dirty water getting into your intake and
mass air meter. OEM units are designed to stay dry in all
kinds of weather. I doubt any of us can feel 5 hp increase
over 300...that's like under 2 %. Its a "feel good" upgrade
at best.

when you use the stock box the air intake is in the grille and you have the filter in the stock box. this will not affect anything. 5 hp could mean win or lose. this is part of racing hp

Interesting thread. I've gotten an Injen for my SC and am not real worried about any HP loss. But that's because I don't race it. I don't even take it over 100. I just like cruising in it with the top up or down. Comfortable, nicely reactive to my throttle or braking inputs, very well appointed and reliable as a rock.

That's why I skipped over the SLK55 AMG which I looked at (very) briefly when I bought the SC. If I were concerned with every single HP and whether I might "lose" off a stop light I would have chosen differently.

How many folks are like me vs. the "go fast(er)" crowd? Seems a lot of angst in many of the threads I've been reading (I'm working my way through the entire forum - am currently at page 285 of 361 here). Seems a lot like people marrying someone so they can change them.
