Default radio cuts off randomly when cranked up high

If i have the radio volume up fairly high, it will keep cutting off for a few seconds then come back on. then cut off again etc....
I presume the amp is getting hot and causing this, am I right? And would I need another amp, or maybe there is a fan in the amp not working? Or am I not even close? Its pretty annoying when that good song comes on and it cuts out lol.

PS. Its not the actual radio that cuts off, its the sound from the speakers.

Do you have aftermarket speakers? or the OEM MLs?

hmm that's quite odd. That's what my RF amp in my Sebring did when it would overheat. With the Lexus I park in the sun (Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and now Illinois) and have never ever had it overheat. Knock wood. I listen to my tunes pretty loud too, so it must run the amp pretty hot. It sounds like the amp is overheating which can lead to amp burn out/failure in the long run.

Does the radio sound cut out? How about the CD or cassette player?

It would be a good data point to determine whether the cut-outs occur in the other modes, especially since it is not power to the radio that is cutting out. Help us help you!

Wait a second. Does it only happen with a certain station or all stations? I had this problem with a specific station. If it's a certain preset station that has "missed beats," then try this fix. Manually tune the same channel and reset the preset by holding down the desired preset number. For example, I found that my preset 3 which was set to say 93.3 would randomly have a dropped beat like every 6 seconds. I tuned it manually and then just reset it for preset 3 again. Fixed the "gaps" in the music. Is this your same problem?

Haha, that would be a good prank. Everyone would think it's the station. I did, for sure. Then i figured out what was happening as it was only a single station that was experiencing these "gaps" and at a constant interval. Quite odd. I know there was a thread out there where another owner had the same issue. I lent my expertise on the issue which fixed his problem, but I can't find that thread now.

It could be the amp or a speaker shorting out which will cause all audio loss.

Does the same with a CD
Actually seems worse. But plays a few seconds then cuts off for like a sec or two. Repeat.
