Faulty 02 sensor bad for motor?
Hello all,
I was wondering whether a faulty 02 sensor (in my case bank 1 sensor 1) is bad for the motor or not?
It is clear to me that a worn out 02 sensor can cause the following problems:
Wastes fuel
Can cause engine performance problems, such as surging and hesitating
Is the number one cause of excessive harmful exhaust emissions
Accelerates catalytic converter damage
BUT are there any other risks in case of damage on the long term?
Does anyone know what the ECU will do in case of a faulty 02 sensor? Wil our Lexus order a rich fuel mixture to prevent heating problems or are we also running the risk of a poor mixture?
Look forward to your replies and thanks in advance.

Is it true that our lexus will act in case of a worn out 02 sensor like if it is a cold start, which means that the computer in case of no signal orders a fixed unchanging rich fuel mixture?

@ Bacardi11, you mean it is right that the ecu will order a rich fuel mixture in case of a faulty 02 sensor?
I will order the new sensor tommorow but I am worried for any motor damage because I thought the race cats were causing the CEL and because of this I have not done anything about this for 3 weeks.

Well, what usually happens especially with OBD2 ECU's is that it will go into a closed loop. Basically, a conservative preprogrammed setting that doesn't allow for outside signals/sensors to modify the maps. You can think of it as a limp mode to get you home.
But, bad O2 sensors could cause anything from engine sludge to blown seals if not corrected. Our engines are the same a the 2nd gen GS(430) and there are a ton of write ups on replacing O2's on that forum. Good luck.

The guy at the exhaust shop probably did it.....He put the PPE headers on the car, which makes a huge difference by the way! He did a great job with the megan downpipe, headers, new tips and bypass with remote control. Now I can choose how much noise I want to make with the car. See below a picture of it:
Made a deal with him, he will change the sensor and I pay for it, so diy is not needed for now. I have read it will take aprox. 2 hours to change this 02 sensor at the passenger side before the CC.
In this case I say, you have to pay when you wanna play. The after service is always very good, so no complaints.
In the netherlands a lot of shops are very reluctant to work on this car, because they do not know it.
