Default What is that for?

So, among other things, I am changing out the rear oxygen sensors on my sc430.

For those that do not know, the rear bank sensors are wired such that the connection is inside the car where the shifter is. So, I took apart this area to get the wires disconnected and found this other item disconnected.. What is it?

I know that this car has some sort of radar detector in it. I need to research to see if it is junk or not and decide if I need to part ways with it.

Are you speaking of the black box in the first pic? Looks like someone unplugged the TPMS connection.

A1Lexis is correct. Those two connectors shown disconnected in your first photo are for the TPMS.
Here is a link to the TPMS disable topic : https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...-system-2.html
It shows the same thing at post #20. All the other stuff looks like the radar detector system.

Also, my reseach is that the radar system was a great system, like $2k in its day. Don't know if it picks up laser or not. Going to try and find the base unit and then decided if I need to pull it or not.

Just do a search on the web for that model number and you likely can pull the operator's manual off their site, along with a spec sheet.

Before owning my SC, I owned a used Audi TT. After a year, I found a hidden switch and further investigation revealed the exact same radar detector. The unit has separate front/back modules, unless they have been removed, so you may want to look for them in the grill / front area and in the rear.

As I recall, my research at the time revealed that the K40 was a very expensive item, usually only sold/installed by authorized dealers, that resulted in a very OEM-looking, clean install that was usually very well hidden. Unfortunately, the detector abilities were pretty crappy, even in its day, compared to the Cincinnati Microwave, Bell, etc. units. In fact, performance was often at the bottom of the pack.

At least around my area, where the police use "instant on" laser units, radar detectors are pretty much worthless. When they go "instant on" you are "instantly busted." Unless your police department is wildly behind the times, the days of constant radar and getting an advance warning via a radar detector are long gone.

Johnny -- Have to agree. Thinking about pulling it out now and seeing if anyone needs parts on ebay.

I had it on after I bought it and it was always chirping in the city. Too many radar sensors on the highway now.

If you ever need to do the oxygen sensors rear bank, may I recommend that you take it to the dealer. WOW. Had to tear out most of the interior to get to the connection and mounting points. Anyway I will make a thread on that elsewhere. For now, I had to take out the radio and the climate control to get out the sides of the console, to get the carpet out and access to the connection. Here is the jumble I found.

Looks like a cell phone was hard mounted and wired to have speakerphone. That little black speaker like thing was mounted where the GPS would be. Looks like a external speaker, but someone wired right into it and soldered that wire.

Had a remote antennna that has since been removed and a direct power source into the fuse box that was cut at the box.

It is also spliced into the factory radio, and that bank of relays appear to be wired such that the car stereo would either shut off or the speakers would have the sound of the caller.

Still have not found the guts to the radar detector, but decided to pull it all out.

I am adding luxlink and input for ipod, so my plan is to get this crud all taken out, get it back to stock, then add the stuff.

What a mess.
Mostly because I forget about stuff, I always add a little tag on my extra installations (masking tape w Sharpie works fine) so that I can tell what my extra wires are for. Too bad your previous owner thought nobody would ever access that area of the car again after he closed it up.
Fool.
