Default creaks, groans and pops from the roof when going over bumps

Two fixes: When raising the roof, stop it halfway. It reveals a round rubber bumpstop that sits against the rear parcel shelf. The bumpstop can be adjusted by rotating it. If you raise the bumpstop, it sits harder against the parcel shelf and reduces movement, thereby reducing noises.

Also, lubricate all roof and boot (trunk) rubbers with glycerine (glycerol). Makes a big difference !

Thanks for the tips. Somebody should do this and take pics for the rest of us. I, too have started to hear noises on humps.

This thread has a link in it that shows the rubber bumpstop that Townsville is referring to, that causes the trunk rattle/noise, that sometimes seems like it's coming from elsewhere:

I'm struggling with a noise that is a creaking sound when driving and going over even small bumps, etc. I tried to adjust the rubber bumpstop as high as it would go, no effect. I also checked to make sure the front seats were not rubbing against the back seat and they were not. I saw two roof and boot (trunk) rubber stops and lubed them, no effect. Could my rubber bumpstop be worn out? Any ideas where this noise is coming from? Thanks in advance.

Try having a passenger in your car specifically for locating the offending noise to as small of an area as possible (or have someone else drive while you search). Knowing approximately where the noise is emanating from will help.

I had a similar noise. The Lexus dealer lubed it and that took care of it. Next time it happens, I'll look for the offending rubber part or better yet I should periodically lube it to reduce wear.

Rip, I'm in agreement that it is a rubber part(s), but simply can't find or see it. I may have to have Lexus look at it.

You can get glycerin from CVS or probably most any other drugstore. It's not expensive and is even carried by my local supermarket chain.

Can someone post a photo of which rubber part(s) to put glycerin on to eliminate the creaking noise/squeaks? Thanks in advance

...I don't have a pic, but I open the top (halfway) & apply Prestone silicone to every rubber gasket/part that you can see. The silicone is a lubricant so it works very well on the mechanical parts also.I do mine about once a month & have none of the normal "creaks & groans" that you described

Default black cable and rubber stopper

Thank you. I found the rubber stopper and adjusted it. Noise is much reduced. I have a question about this though and hope someone can clarify. How much can I raise the rubber stopper?

I had to raise it a full turn plus half turn, to get noise down to a minimum. Would be nice to know how much others had to adjust?

One observation, though, as I raise the rubber stopper, the black cable in the trunk, has gotten shorter. Is this normal? The vinyl trunk cover now wont go all the way in when I pull it down because the black cable is shorter and it kind of gets caught under it.

Thanks in advance.
