Default Vehicle skid control

Ok I know there are several VSC threads, but I have found that they seem to deal with check engine light issues or cat converter issues. My check engine light is off, only the VSC off and VSC lights are on and the owner's manual says this indicates a malfunction of the vehicle skid system. To be clear, these lights are off after I start the car, and only come on after I put the car in gear and start to move. Does anyone know what most commonly fails in the skid control circuit and how to troubleshoot it? I believe the ABS, traction control and wheel height sensors (as well as the ECU) are all part of this system, so probably a PITA.
