I get a rubbing sound in my steering column when it retracts when the key turns off. Only does it a couple times a year. Any ideas?

I also get a squeaking sound in my steering column both when it comes out and retracts and this happens frequently but not always. I once had Lexus service look at it but they said nothing wrong - maybe it wasn't doing it when they tried it. I think mine is worse when it is hot out.

When mine started making the noise it seemed to be more in the hot weather but now it happens even if not hot but it really doesn't happen in the very cold weather. The first time it happened a few yrs. ago it was summer and I might have focused on the weather and then noticed over time that more times than not it was making noise. It is a squeaking rubbing sound going both in and out. Next time I have it in I might have them take another look.

I just wiped the cowl around the top off the column with some WD40 and that cured it.
Seems to rub against the underside of the dash.

Doesn't the WD40 smell stick around?

I used leather treatment and it helped eliminate the noise in my car. In my car, it was definitely related to the temperature. Once it got above 100°F (which is about 150°F in the car when in the sun), my steering wheel column squealed like a banshee.

No, the smell was not noticeable as far as I can remember. I didn't spray it directly on thecowl just a little on a cloth, wiped it over and it did the trick.

BTW we never get 100 degrees here...............lol
