Default Am I Too Tall For SC430?

I am 6'-5" tall and just test drove a SC430. I love the car, but the wind on my forehead when the top was down made me feel like the villain "Jaws" in the James Bond movie, where his head stuck through the roof when driving. The slipstream seemed to be aimed directly at my forehead.

I do not have this same problem with my current car, a 911 convertible. My guess is that the angle of the windshield on the SC430 is fairly low so that the wind does not get kicked up and over the heads of genetic freaks like me.

Here are my questions for the forum:
Do any of you taller drivers experience the same problem? If so, have you figured out anything to improve the situation? Has anyone installed an aftermarket drivers seat that is lower? Is there a wind deflector that can be installed on the windshield?

I look forward to your comments.

Hahah. That's pretty funny. Have you tried to tilt the seat back? Does your head hit the roof when the top is up?

I'm 6'1 and I have no problems....it is actally quite spacious. I do have the seat tilted back though because that is my driving style. Also, I test drove a 911 convertible, and one of things I hated about it was the driving position. You are much lower and more snug in the SC, dont know if this helps, but my point is that when you are accomodated to one thing anything else seems really odd.

My parent's own both an SC and a carrera and I would have to say the Carrera seems more spacious. My dad won't even drive the SC because his head almost touches the roof when the top is up. He doesn't have this problem in the carrera.

While the SC430 is a little tight on headroom for me with the top up, thats really not my problem. I intend to rarely keep the top up while driving.

My problem is with the car when the top is down. If I put the seat at a comfortable angle, the wind over the windshield hits my freakishly tall head. I dont mean a little wind in the hair. I am talking about a 60 mile-an-hour blow dryer aimed at my forehead.

Im sure if I reclined the seat way back, the problem would go away, but that's not an acceptable solution.

Then it sounds like you're too tall.

Yeah, it sounds as if you are too tall. Again its to each their own. I like the comfort of the SC, much like I did my Supra....it was something I didnt like about the Carrera, which is one main reason I passed on it. The SC has more of a cockpit feeling to it. As for too tall, Michael Strahan used to have a Supra....now he is 6'5. Now if you you planning on driving the SC like my father sits in it, forget it. I think his waist is above the windshield and hes only like 5'9-5'10, just a not on that it is also very dangerous to drive too close to the steering, all kinds of warnings against.

I would have to agree that the SC430's interior is much more luxurious then that of the Carrera, but on the other hand, the new carrera's are much more luxurious now then they were 5 years ago.

Tilt the seat back. I'm 6'4'' and I test drove one and had the same room up front that I have in my GS.

Hello,
I am 6 foot 5 1/2 inches tall. Love the car (had it four months). I drive the car with the seat at a comfortable recline. I haven't really found/noticed the wind to be intolerable. I also like to wear a baseball hat when the top is down. Even at a good speed, I haven't lost my baseball cap yet!

spfechner, I know what you mean. There's that distinct line of air over the windshield which catches my hair. (I'm 6'0".) And I've wondered if someone over 6'2" would be bothered by this.

Fyi, I drove a new Mercedes SL55 a few weeks ago and the airstream line is a *little* higher but not much.

It sounds like you need custom seats. Sorry, don't know of any aftermarkets for seats or windscreens for the SC. You might consult 310 Motoring - they modify a lot of NBA players' cars here in L.A.

You guys that are 6'3'' and under most have most of your height in your torso area, because at 6'4'' I had no problem with the wind. There are also some other 6'4''+ guys that said they have had no problem either. Maybe our height is in are legs and you guys have very long torso's.

Sorry to say this, but if you want a Lex, you need to get a LX or GX... Don't force yourself into getting the SC. I own a GS and my wife owns a Nissan 240Sx (recently married). I thought the nissan had decent space, but the more I drive it, the smaller it feels, I really don't like this car the more I drive it. It sounds like you need a MB CL500. Good luck
