Smile Spare tire success on craigslist!

This Forum is so helpful in so many ways! After reading about the applicability of a RX8 spare I went to Search Tempest in search of one. Sure enough I found one in Kansas for 100$. I offered 60$ and postage which came to 100$ total. Received it yesterday and it is unused and perfect with it's cover! Hope I never have to use it! If any Forum members do not know about Search Tempest I would encourage you to become familiar with it. I have used it many times. Thanks again Forum members!

Now that you have your spare, you need to decide how you want to install it. I cut a base out of 3/8" plywood and wrapped it in material. Here's how it turned out.

makes a nice storage area for a 12v compressor.

There is a thread or two that shows how a member built his. (It was probably Poqman, but I don't remember.)

I like the way you fabricated a new trunk base. I just bought the Mazda RX-7spare from Coach1. It turns out he lives about 30 minutes from my house but only 5 minutes from my daughters house. Any way I was looking online and found the OEM spare tire cover (part number 64771-24040) for $135.19 and the OEM trunk mat (part number 64711-24170) for $62.46 but I may opt to build my own.

Thanks, It was really easy with a jig saw. I cut an exact copy from the original base, then made a paper template of the cutout for the spare tire and lastly, removed the material from the base for the tire. I went by an auto upholstery shop and bought a gray material for the top side, a black material for the bottom side and a can of spray adhesive. I had a scrap piece of plywood, so total cost was about $25.

A further tip for other Forum members like me who are setting up the spare in the rear. I just ordered a full black cover for the spare RX8 from Amazon for $14 and change. They have several to choose from! Sure beats other custom prices. Good luck.

Well, you guys (Coach1 and cadzilla88) are no longer in my doghouse! I just bought the tire on eBay and with shipping, it was $91. Thanks for the info! It must have just listed.

Glad it worked out for you Barncat. Have you posted any photos of your new ride yet?
