Timing belt (miles or age??)

My timing belt on a 2002 model was changed 2 months ago. They look OK but you can see that the rubber has started to age crack when you turn it over and squeeze them between the fingers. I changed the CAM and crank seals as well as the water pump and bearing whilst it was taken apart.

I have an '02 and I replaced mine this year at about 56,000 miles. The old one looked to be in perfect shape and my car spent the majority of the time in Florida.
NOTE: However...being that our engines are inference engines...for peace of mind...I still feel it's worth have the work done or doing it yourself, (pretty easy), especially if you plan to keep you vehicle for years to come. Heck even if you don't it's a much better selling perk if you can say that work has been done as it gives the next owner that warm fuzzy feeling!

Thanks for thinking about it. I really would just appreciate the help with tips. Perhaps we can exchange pics. We can even do a live Mikogo session and I can have my portable camera and then you can just tell me how, what to do. Up for it?

I would suggest you follow the same thread/w pics that I did along with your handy dandy service manual on DVD.
My only issue was the stupid plastic clip that holds the electrical connection for the cam sensor to the outside of the timing belt shield...ugh!

The Lexus Drivers page shows the belt on my 2003 SC was changed by the dealer at 55,000 miles in May 2008. Six and a half years later the car now has 82K miles on it.
Any suggestions as to when I should be thinking about replacing it again?

the belt should be change every 100,000 miles. my belt was change at 73000 looked like new. my sisters Honda has 140.000 just was changed no cracks looked good. but if they break it's a engine. there are people with over 200,000 still running.

I've mentioned it a number of time in posts here, but my timing belt appeared to be in very good condition when I replaced it last year ('02 SC430 with 37K miles). Since I did the work it didn't cost much but I can understand the desire to wait longer to have a professional do it for a fee.

Even an experienced mechanic will need several hours and special tools to change a timing belt. In addition, with this much of the car already torn apart, many choose to replace other parts such as the water pump, tensioners, some senors, even spark plugs. This is NOT an inexpensive service, and Lexus recommends 90K miles and/or 10 years. The motor itself is labeled as an interference engine, if the belt fails the motor will suffer substantial damage.
