Crazy, but even on a jag I still don't like them, I would even go as far as saying 'hate'. Might as well be driving around with hubcaps. They need to be banished from existence haha
gripau, I actually like those a lot better than our pie plates haha

There must have been a case for the pie plates. Maybe well ahead of its time.

So people were right to criticize Lexus. It's like showing up at the tennis club dressed in a tuxedo.

As an example, you only ever see these pie-plate Wald wheels advertised on an LS or an S-Class.
Sports car wheels are meant to be thin and light, and show off the big brake calipers.

SC Pie Plates
I came across this thread and couldn't help responding as a new owner of a '02 SC with pie plates.
To each his own. To me, taking the pie plates off would be like removing the WSW tires on a '53 Vette you just purchased and putting on black walls to make it "current".
Practically every car I see today has a 5 spoke wheel on it. That's today's look but I want to stay with the original design.IMHO

Wow! But I'm not surprised after swapping them for winter wheels a couple of times. My wife's Subaru has 17" wheels, but quite substantial, and the pie-plates are much heavier.
On a side note, my old Miata's BBS wheels were 8.5 pounds.

Lower unsprung weight
That's why I'm replacing mine with 18 - 20 lb Enkei wheels. If we had more pot holes I'd go to the 17" wheels.
The pie-plates were an offshoot of the streamliner wheels that pop up every decade or so. You see them on the Bonneville salt flats LSR cars even today.
