Intermittent=starter problems and fuel pump problems. They go hand in hand. I've seen it with other Lexus forums for other models...just not common with the 430. Agree with Habious though that not running rough kinda rules out the fuel filter/air filter and spark plugs (if anyone was thinking that), but due to the intermittent nature and the starter 3/4th the way issue I still think it could be fuel cutoff, charging/starting system and maybe a bad coil. You can have fuel pump issues, MAF issues, starter issues and coil issues without running rough, can't you??? Just the list of suggestions I would ask about. Good luck Texas and let us know what's the culprit. Hope you get it fixed reasonably and no probs with the LL.

When you say the "the key" do mean the battery that powers the transponder that talks to the immobilizer system or do you actually mean the physical key?

I'm not too sure. I dug out my spare valet key and used it for a week now. Not a single issue with the starter at all. I'm assuming something is wrong with my full key, so I have both on the keyring right now (one to lock, one to start with). I will go get a new key made and give it a whirl.

Don't think you need a new key, just the battery inside, unless your key has some major wear and tear. BTW transponder keys are not cheap.

If you look there is a very small Phillips screw on one side. Take it out, carefully pry open the case and pop out the disk battery. If you stop by a dealer, most parts guys will sell you a battery for a few dollars and put it in for you.

My 02 takes a CR1616 battery...if you look in your owners manual under "replacing the battery" you'll find the instructions there.

Transponder keys battery is just to supply power to send the signal wirelessly to open door or lock doors or lower windows or set alarm or trigger panic horn . The transponder signal that your imobilzer is looking for is a passive signal. That said it does not require power to be identified by your car. I dont think its the key. Keep us posted I would like to know the outcome

I'd go out on a limb and say it could be a problem with your fuel pump or relay that turns on your fuel pump. The residual pressure from the last time your engine was running may be just enough fuel to get the engine started but the engine quickly runs out of fuel and dies. Switching things off and on may kick the pump or relay just enough to get it started and the fuel pressure returns. The longer than expected cranking times could be related to low fuel pressure.
