An actual failure of the mechanical cable itself sounds unlikely, however it may have become disconnected at one or both of two ends. You'll need to inspect it at both end to see if that is the problem. If so, then reseating the cable should fix it.
The cable itself snakes from under the dash, just right of the trunklid release switch, through the firewall and up to latching mechanism. At each end the cable should have a lead slug which fits into corresponding receiver and mechanical lever. I have a diagram around here somewhere if you need one.

I had a Mechanic friend look at it and the latch seem to be sticking--He was able to move a small screw drive around by the latch and the release would connect. However, I have to do that each time I open the Hood and close it. MAY NEED NEW LATCH AND CABLE. WHER CAN I FIND THEM? THANKSthanks for the diagram and info

Mine is broken right now. I am taking my car in tomorrow for a service, and since I am still under warranty I am going to have them replace it. I think the plastic clips on it (that hold the cable) broke.
