I have a 2002 SC430 with the original map CD. I just received the 2012 map CD from Sewell Lexus, $162 with our Club Lexus discount. The look is very similar to the original but the content is what I needed. Imagine 12 years of street changes in the DC metro area, wow. A few new features embedded in the points of interest that could come in handy later on.
Install was very simple, instructions are on the Sewell website, 1) turn on car 2) press a button to pop out the old cd 3) insert new cd 4) wait for cd to load, That simple!

If your asking if you can copy the DVD and will the copy work here's my experience.

When I recently purchased the $169 upgrade DVD from my dealer they were very adamant that there would be no refunds once purchased. This made me concerned that if the disk ever got scratched or failed to work I was SOL. So I then did what I did with all software I have ever bought. I backed it up or copied it and used the copy to install. I stored the original purchased disk.

On the Gen 4 Nav in my 08 SC430 I store the purchased DVD I bought from my dealer and use a copy that I burned for the car. The DVD is a Double a layer DVD, not the standard single layer that is more commonly available. You will need a Double layer DVD writer and a Double layer DVD.

Best Buy sells both double layer (multiz-layer) DVD writer drives and verbatim double layer DVD disks. The double layer disks hold 8+ gb of data.

My backup is operating fine and the original is safely stored away.

Default Newbie- sc 430-2007

Hi all

I just bought my dream car- SC 430 with Pearl white on cream interior, drk wood, 36k miles and I could not be more thrilled! Except, I just moved to DC from San Francisco and cannot figure out how to drive around here as they are all crazy drivers and the freeways are even more insane.

How do I update my Navigation and will it reflect all the construction? It kept sending me around and around DuPont Circle.

Otherwise I am loving my beautiful car!

I lived in DC for 5 years, and going around DuPont Circle several times to get out at the correct street is about average.
Check the Seawell site for a very good price (or just call them) on the latest NAV data disc; if your data is more than 3 or 4 years old, you should get a new disc. To update, all you do is put the new disc into the drive in the trunk. To be safe, do it while the car is running, and leave it running until the new system appears on the screen.
Happy motoring.

I know this is old and I hope you are still active. If someone else knows the answer, please chime in...

I have a 2002 SC430 and I believe it was built in 2001, with that said,
Do I have a Gen2 or Gen3 Navi DVD reader?

My system has never been updated.

Will either generation read Double Layer disks?

I looked at the DVD disk in my system now and it has less than 4.7Gb so I would guess it is single layer.

I recently sold my SC430, but mine was a very early car, built in 2001. The DVD was a double layer data disc with about 8 GIGs of data. I don't know why you would have a single layer DVD, unless it's a copy compressed onto a single layer disc, which don't often work well. Even copies burnt onto double layer discs don't work well. Perhaps your file utility is only reading one layer.
Once you update from data version 1, a new version of the OS will be installed. All subsequent data discs have this updated OS on them, but there is only one and it will only be installed once. After that, your version 1 data disc cannot be read by the system, and it will be useless to you. For many years, my two cars read the same data disc ('04 RX and '02 SC), even though the RX was a newer gen of the DVD. This was handy for me as I just moved the most recent data disc into the car I was going to use on a trip (I think '08 was the last time I updated the data disc). Both systems read the double layer DVD without any problems.
If your data disc is in fact the original, then you are seeing maps made in about 2000, and all you can search for is restaurants and gas stations, etc, that were there 15 years ago, which is going to be highly unreliable information. I think an upgrade is in order. Be careful in ordering, as, for each year, there is a version formatted for the various systems that have been put into use since 2001. To buy new, your best bet is probably the member deal from Sewell (expiring at the end of Feb). If you are searching for a deal, your best bet might be to find someone who recently upgraded and is selling his old disc. Beware of copies, as they just don't work very well (there is some serious copy protection on these discs). Also, many sellers, especially on eBay, don't always describe precisely what the disc is that they are selling, so be sure you are getting an original disc made for this system.

Thank you for your very detailed response.

Let me clarify, I believe the original Disk I have is SL because I thought I only saw less than 4.7Gb of data on the disk. I will check it again.

I do appriciate you telling me that my Navi DVD reader is capable of reading DL disks.

I did do some research and I saw that the latest build for the gen2/3 is from 2013 and the DVD label has a U8 on the right side of the disk.
I also realize it has a part number.

PT219-GN23W-13 Lexus Part Number
86271-GN23W-13 Toyota Part number
I have figured out the following as it pertains to the part number,
PT219- Lexus Part Number
86271- Toyota part number
GN-23W,
GN- Generation
23- gen 2 or 3
W- Western Hemisphere or North America
13- the year, 2013

You should be able to find a good price for the v2012 DVD Gen 2/3. I sold mine a bit ago for less than $80.00. Post WTB here and also on the Toyota forums. Good luck.

Great idea and tks for the tip!

Unfortunately, I have been redirected to work on the brake master cylinder leak and motor mounts!

It going to be an adventure this weekend!

What you did wrong was burn an untested, untried ISO file of a copy protected file system to a DVD of unknown quality, probably without setting the booktype. Copies of NAV DVD data discs are very, very hard to make - the copy protection is far more complex than than on video DVDs. Even when they work, they will stop working without warning, probably when accessing a new area. I have found that it's not worth the time or trouble or wasted double layer blank DVDs. Just buy a real one, with the realization that if you can afford to drive around in a $60,000.00 convertible, you can afford a DVD.

Default Upgrade Navigation on Original Screen

HI!
I am new here and am hoping to get some guidance on possibly upgrading the navigation/stereo system in our 2002 SC430, whose name is Rex.
Rex recently had his ECU replaced (though I am not sure he needed it...) and now I am getting the No disk detected error. After perusing this thread to find some info on how to fix it, I am now thinking I don't really want to waste the money on the disk. I saw a response where one of the members mentioned they replaced theirs with the AVH-X3700BHS Pioneer receiver and I started to rabbit hole into options for the upgrade. It seems that all the ones I have seen fail to utilize the original pop-out screen for the navigation. I may have missed something in the photos, and maybe the screen is being utilized??? I would love to keep that feature while still upgrading the navigation and adding hands-free phone, SirusXm..etc. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much for everyone's time and help! Cheers!!
