daytime running lights
Is there a way to turn the daytime running lights off? They annoy the heck out of me when someone else is coming towards me, so I presume I annoy other drivers.

Yes.
Have your dealer modify this C-BEST option:
ILLUMINATE ENTR - DRL FUNCTION --> OFF
The complete list is at:

or download it from my web site in Word or RTF format.

Genearch, I did not know that daytime running lights were now mandatory in the US. They are in Canada, and last December GM, in an act of treason against motorists, petitioned NHTSA to require them in the US (GM deserves their diminishing share of the car market), but has this been acted upon?
See www.lightsout.org for a lot of info on this issue.

oh!!!
I doubt it!!! ...just bought a 2002 Boxster S and it does NOT have daytime running lights! ....so it better not be a law... Maybe I should hurry up and get my dealer to change the c-best option because I hate those damn daytime running lights myself!

in the US, DRLs are not required. but you think they're annoying? they are a safety feature. the lights make cars more visible - especially in dusky conditions. i saw a demo of a car coming towards the driver and it was difficult to see but w/ the DRLs, it was easy to discern. i will not be suprised if they are made mandatory much like the 3rd brake light in the rear.
i find it annoying when it's pouring outside and people don't turn on their lights.

I think several states require that you put your low beams on when it is raining or foggy. It is a perfectly good idea. The org. site I mentioned in my prior post has a whole bunch of scientific arguments against DRLs, apparently the strongest is that there is no actual proof of any reduction in accidents. Countries like Sweden and Canada which require them are in Northern latitudes where "daytime" is short, especially in winter, but the US is pretty big. My own special beef is that once upon a time if you saw a car coming at you with its headlights on you knew something was offbeat and you should be on the alert, an accident up ahead, a police car lurking, or, of course, a slow traffic blocking funeral procession. Those were valuable warnings and we don't have them any more. We should not let the "safety *****", with their pesky intrusions into our individual freedom, get any more of a bite than they have now !!!! We were lucky to roll them back on the 55mph speed limit.

Alpha,
My sentiments exactly ! I had my dealer change some of my C-Best options including the DRL's. They are now OFF. I also have the doors unlock when the car is put into park and have them auto lock at 10 mph instead of when the car is put in gear.
Soooo cooooool.....

Reaching into my piggy bank and pulling out two cents ....
Personally, I like DRLs. I started using my headlights on cloudy days and during dusk back in '72 when I had a silver 240Z. (Wait a minute, I still have that 240Z!). The color blended in with the road and the sky making me me darn near invisible. The headlights helped a lot - people stopped pulling out in front of me.

Yeah, I dont believe it is a law either. In NJ, the law is wipers on headlights on....of course there are many idiots who dont understand that, including some cops. In the rain it can be very difficult to see a car, I think its better, not from seeing the headlights but rather following a car with its tailights on...you know exactly where the car is.
But back to the DRLs, I have seen articles in Car and Driver and etc. The DRLs are a law in Canada and havent reduced accidents. I mean come on, the best way to reduce fatalities and such would be to make the speed limit 20mph everywhere. The problem with DRLs is that if it is a law and all cars have them, isnt it just the same as all cars not having them on? Of course you notice the ones now, because it is a small grouping.
Mine will be shut off next trip to the dealer, and than I can go back to harrassing Saturn drivers, "Your lights are on!!!!"

I asked me salesperson to deactivate the DRL when I bought my SC430 (and turn on the automatic door locks/unlocks) but she told me that they wouldn't do that because it was a safety issue. This may have just been her opinion rather than a dealer or Lexus policy.
I probably could try again with my service tech but they don't bug me that much.

imho, i still like daytime running lights. normally, they are not as bright as the regular low beams. on one of my cars, they're separate lights (the lows are hids). on my other car, they used to be same (halogen) and the bulb would have a lower brightness during the day and then get to normal low beams at night.
