Default My award-winning CarPC Installation

I hope I don't get in too much trouble for double-posting this (in both the NELOC Forum and the SC430 Forum). I'm one of the very few NELOC'ers with an SC430 so I don't think the two forums have much cross-traffic...and I think both groups might find this interesting.

Along with being a member of Club Lexus and NELOC, I also hang out with a group of CarPC hobbyists from www.mp3car.com.

The locals meets have always been quite loose...4 or 5 cars showing up with a good turnout.

Mp3Car.com is actually based out of Baltimore and, about 3 weeks ago, they had their first national meet...the AFKFest2009. There was a great turnout (25-30 cars) and lots of professionals from the industry (both specific to the CarPC hobby and to aftermarket audio in general). Along with a BBQ and the obligatory show-off-your-ride portion of the meet, the industry professionals held seminars with Q&A in the morning. It was a great day! Lots of information flowing in both directions.

My CarPC installation was awarded "Technical Best In Show" which was defined as "the car that has the most impressive use of technology" - as chosen by an anonymous technologist.

The link below will take you to the blog page with the video featuring my Car and CarPC installation.

Also, as an interesting side-note, the winners of the contests (myself included) are being interviewed and our photos taken with our cars for a New York Times article (hopefully to be published in October).

Kudos Greg on a great job and creativity. My main question is, where do you get that sort of time?!?

I've been waiting to see this -- headed to the link now.
BTW, when I read about the 2010 SC, my first thought was that they are still light years behind your ride.

just a random thought. but i wanted to see what you think about this idea. your comment about internet access got me thinking about this. what do you think about the possibility of using a mobile phone for a car pc? they have enough computing power to run everything you're doing now. and internet access is much cheaper this way. the problem i guess would be getting a video signal from your phone. i'm not sure if any currently do that. i guess it would be a matter of someone writing the software.

Tricky finding a phone that has full tv out, menus etc. iphone/ipod only do video and music menus. Even the Cowon Q5 does not have full tv out or I would have been very tempted myself.

If you can get by with just wi-fi then a wii , playstation , apple tv is probs easiest.

To me, the most impressive part of Greg's install is the use of the "OPEN" button to switch inputs. Clean, slick and totally OEM. Also, gotta give Greg props for thinking that one up -- it's not like that was in some installation manual.
