Default Cost of timing belt change and 90,000 mile service

I'm coming up on 90,000 mile service which includes changing the timing belt.

Got a quote from a well regarded indy Lexus mechanic (Eiffel's in Marietta, GA).

$1080 - timing belt, water pump, thermostat, drive belts, etc....
$349 - 90,000 mile service

What do you guys think? Good price?

Right around 1400 is the price for an RX and SC from a Lexus dealer. Suggest you see if a toyota dealer will do your car, I had my RX (same as a Highlander) done for $850. GOOD LUCK

I think that's a common price quote from a Lexus dealership, but it's certainly not a "good" price. I'd say a "good" price would be about $500 less. That's what my mechanic charges for the 90,000 mile service(s), but he's not at Lexus. He's a former service manager at an Acura dealership who opened up his own business. He knows his stuff and I trust him much more than anyone at a dealership. Dealerships rip you off, there's just no doubt about that.

If you get ANY work done at a dealership, you are paying too much, IMO. Look for a reputable place that ONLY does work on Toyota/Lexus vehicles. They are MUCH cheaper and have every bit the qualifications and expertise. You'll save not only on the 15, 30, 60 and 90 thousand mile checks, but everything else as well; especially the oil changes. It all adds up.

The light came on for me when every time I took my car in to a dealership's service department, they almost always found something else wrong with my car than what I took it in for. My mechanic NEVER does that. That speaks volumes. It's all about who you trust, and I NEVER trust the dealership. They are there to make money and they cheat people by telling them they need services they don't, and charging too much for the services that are needed.

If getting warranty work done and you're not paying, I have no problem with the dealership. But if YOU are paying, stay away from them.

You guys are confusing me

This is an independent mechanic that specializes in Toyo/Lexus.

The 90,000/mile service is $349.

The timing belt and other stuff that you change with it is $1080.

TooCoolSC - are you saying you have a mechanic that would your timing belt for $580 that you trust?

If you trust YOUR GUY then go with it...........not that we drive Econo cars so its worth it to have it done right and backed by the guy who did it.

I use Nalley Lexus but Jatin who is the lead tech there tells me what needs to be done and then I tell the service writer.....saves me alot of bucks on the routine check ups.........if you want his cell number email me at jdseltzer@aol.com for it.

I've gotten some parts from Nalley. That dealership is off the charts. I've been in 4 star hotels that aren't as nice

I'll use my guy, and thanks for the info everyone!

I have known and used my mechanic for a long time, and for all I know, he might be giving me a little better deal than most. But before buying my car, he said he would do just the timing belt for around $700, or the entire 90,000 mile service (which includes the timing belt) for $900. I've been told that most Lexus dealers charge around $1,500 for the 90,000 mile service. Since your estimate was pretty close to that, I assumed you were talking about a dealership.

The most important thing is for you to trust your guy, though. A good mechanic who you have ultimate trust in is invaluable. There's nothing worse than feeling like you've been ripped off, and most of us never know if we have been, or not. If you like your mechanic and trust him, then you're definitely doing the right thing in going with him.
