Extended Warranties -makes sense?
Since Lexus cars are soooo reliable, would it make sense for me to purchase an extended warranty on a used SC430? I'm looking to get a used one with about 50-80K miles. Extending the warranty to 100K mi for about $1700.
What do you guys suggest?

Depending on how much you will drive this car, it may not be worth the extra ~2K. I know I will push through the 100K mark within 2 years (~18-20K/year) and if I didn't believe in the reliability of Lexus, then I wouldn't have bought this car. Also, I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, so if things do go south, I know I won't be in too much trouble. That being said, there are those who would gladly pay that amount of money for peace of mind.
BTW, certified pre-owned cars from authorized Lexus dealers already come with a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty at no extra charge. The dealership offered to extend my warranty to 7 years for ~$1,100...which doesn't make any sense to me because the 100,000 limit doesn't extend as well. Honestly, what good is a 5 or 7 year warranty if you can only drive your car <5000 miles a year?

Not on a Toyota
I read somewhere on I think Carpoint.com or MSN that it may not be worth it. Depending on what vehicle you get. Look at Consumer Reports Car Issue. That will give you an excellent idea if you should get it or not. People get it because it gives them a piece of mind. Attached is a simple link that summerizes it.
I have a 2001 Mustang GT and bought the 100K extended warranty. And lucky i did!!! I knew ford wasn't reliable. Just got the Mustang for Pure Power! I had minor problems even after the warranty was up, like window wasn't rolling up, rear axel was messed up, water in the headlights, ect... it goes on and on as you could imagine since its a ford. I took it in for things up until 99,925. Ever since then I haven't had problems. I never had problems with the Engine. its a strong engine. Not to give Lexus a bad name but the Mustang is more reliable than my Lexus!!! Cheaper to maintain too!
I didn't buy a extended warranty for my Lexus. I very much doubt that i will have over 2K worth of problems before i hit 100K miles. Don't forget, there's a deductable when buying a warranty. It can go up to $500! So think first before you buy. Yeah for Consumer Reports!!!

Using the warranty is one thing, does it really save you money in the long run is another.
Good luck!
