Sizing on winter rims
I'm sure I'll take grief for this but I need some help so here goes...
I live up in Toronto and have no choice but to drive my 2002 430 over the winter. Obviously the runflats aren't going to cut it as confirmed by a recent trip down the driveway and a quick bit of research on clublexus. Actually we did get out onto the street after a half hour of salt and shovelling but that was even scarier.
I know everyone likes nice rims but in winter I'm a huge fan of straight steel wheels and tall skinny DEDICATED winter tires. We have a lot of salt on the roads here in Toronto and I've had more than one set of rims destroyed so I flat out refuse to spend good cash on winter rims. That and the fact we have better places to put the $$s right now means it aint gonmna happen so please, please, please... lets skip the flames telling me to buy better looking rims
Anyways...
I've done my research on clublexus and I know I can put a set of 16" rims (5 on 4-1/2s, 114.3mm in metric-speak) and some 215/60s or 205/65s on the car which will put me smack in the middle of great winter tire territory. Since others have done it, I suspect I'll be OK with caliper clearance issues on a 16" rim (I hope) but what about offset and backspacing? Stock is apparently +45 but if I take the rim width down by 25-30 mm does this becaome a non issue?
Anyone done this and have feedback on what to look for?
