Singing the praises of the new SL 500 so lavisly and so soon, sounds a bit naive to me, usless the guy has invested in one, and has had adequate time behind the wheel. I've owned and driven Mercedes for more than 15 years, and they do have their limitations. So did my pocket book, so I moved on. For the more than $90 K that one could invest in this long-term "Inovative" night mare, he could have had a new SC,and a LOADED Miata for his significant other, Plus a V8!
I've had two BMW Convertibles with Optional Hardtops and Sport Suspensions and with all of the available options. The 2001 330 was a work of art over the still impressive '95 325 Ci. At 130 mph, they tracked as surefootedly as a Freight Train on a track, and rode just as hard as one, and with only 17" Alloys. (I often thought about naming the 330: "Teddy Roosevelt", 'cause it was one a "Rough Rid'en Son of a B _ _ _ _!") The ride with those 18" Run Flats on my new SC coming in for the Holidays, can't be nearly as hard to take as those two Bimmers, especially as on an 11 hour trip back up through the Smokeys from Spartansburg to Indy. That darn 330 ran as true at 130 as it did at 75, all day long, and most of the night on the Interstates, but you always got a wake-up call when you crossed a RR track, or ran on some local County Road with minor irregularities.
If the new SC gets delivered prior to the Holidays, I plan on driving it down from Indy to Sarasota, with a new set of OEM (SC 430) Dedicated Wheels and Dunlop Winter Sport II Winter Tires installed by my Selling / Servicing Dealer. With the already limited Trunk Space, how much risk would I be taking on, if I made the trip up and back without a Spare? Would I be better off making the trip with one in the trunk to be safe, then leaving it in the garage while in Sarasota, to provide more trunk space for all of those Christmas presents?

WJS,
That is what road side assistance is for buddy.. So riding without a spare shouldn't be too much of a concern.. Just make sure you have your cell with you..
Dunlop or Pirelli i've enjoyed both winter tires.. My only beef with the Dunlop winter rubber is they are super noisey compared to Pirelli.. Honestly if I were to drive my SC in the winter I would of downsized my wheels to 17" since you need that extra rubber in the white stuff.. Just my 2 cents but then again you are doing all freeway winter driving so forget what I just said..
