Is this map update disc compatible with the 2002 SC430? Printed on the disc are these numbers:
86271-33033
464210-0510
Data Ver.04.1
(Edit) THE ANSWER: YES, IT WORKS.
86271-33033
464210-0510
Data Ver.04.1

I have not checked any numbers, but that looks like a data disc that would work.
I have an '02 SC430, and upgraded from ver 1 to version 2 and then, just last January, to ver 5.01. Since I skipped ver 4, I don't have the DVD to compare to your picture.
Since your DVD says data version 4, be aware that it is not the latest version; it would be year old data, but still a lot more recent than the ver 1 data that came with your car.
Also, be aware that, as the instructions note, if you update from version 1, you will no longer be able to have the system read the original version 1 DVD, because the version 2 and later discs update the operating system.
If it is not the proper DVD, putting it in your drive to find out will PROBABLY not harm anything, because if it's not the proper disc, the system will tell you that the disc is not recognized (PROBABLY -- I would think --- I'm not sure -- you are on your own here).
Also note that you have to have a disc in the car for the system to work, so borrowing one for a short period of time is not much help, especially if it upgrades the OS and will not thereafter read your own disc. It is not easy (or legal) to copy a DL DVD for this purpose, and copies can work for a while and then not work when they try to access a data file not previously accessed, so just having a "copy" and not also an original is risky (it is legal to copy your own DVD for a backup, in case you don't want to keep it in the car, but it's still not easy).

I also Googled the part number and observing descriptions of discs being auctioned on eBay. It seems that this DVD will work. There is a pattern on the part number - the last two digits are important. The second to the last number, in this case the number 3, refers to fitment compatibility with gen2 and gen3 systems. The last digit refers to the calendar year. It's better if I lay it out here and you will see the pattern:
For Gen 2 and Gen 3 Systems (02-04 SC430)
2001 Map Update Disc
86271-33030
Data 2001 ver.1
2002 Map Update Disc
86271-33031
Data ver.02.1
2003 Map Update Disc
86271-33032
Data ver.03.1
2004 Map Update Disc
86271-33033
Data ver.04.1
2005 Map Update Disc
86271-33034
Data ver.05.1
Here's what people are saying online and seems consistent with each other:
Quote 1:
"yes the special thing to do is get a disc that was made to update yours. NOT ONE THAT CAME IN A 2004 BUT ONE MADE IN 2004 TO UPDATE THE OLDER DISCS . the 2003 update has part number 86271-33032 on the disc. the bubble wrap had part number mn 00230-dvd03-cy. the 2004 update has part numnber 86271-33033 on ther dvd and the bubble wrap has MN-00230-dvd04-CY. "
Quote 2:
The disc you need is 86271-33033, or 33034. Visually you can tell the GEN 3 map disc because it has silver graphics in the background. Plus, the higher the last digit the better.
Quote 3:
It will fit the following cars
LS430 2001-2003
GS430 2001-2003
GS300 2001-2003
ES300/330 2002-2003
RX300/330 2001-2004
LX470 2001-2003
IS300 2002-2003
SC430 2002-2003
This is the list that my local dealer told me it would fit. I recomend that you check with your dealer to see if this disc will work in your vechile before you bid. The part number for this disc is 86271-33033, 464210-0510 and DATA ver.04.1.
This dvd will only work in vechiles with a gen2 or gen3 system. To find out what disc you have, push the menu button and in the upper right hand corner of the screen will be a button that says map dvd push that and it will show you what version you currently have.
Quote 4:
DATA Ver.05.1 Upgrade for GEN2 and GEN3 Lexus vehicles:
86271-33034
464210-0640
This DVD will work with the following vehicles:
LS430 2001-2003
GS430 2001-2005
GS300 2001-2005
ES300/330 2002-2003
RX300/330 2001-2004
LX470 2001-2003
IS300 2002-2005
SC430 2002-2004
GX470 2003-2004

If you think it will work, give it a shot.
Start the car and leave the engine running.
Take out the old disc and put in the new disc.
The screen will now tell you, in big letters, NOT to turn off the engine while the update is taking place. This only takes about 2 or 3 minutes, but you do not want to interrupt the OS update process or you will really screw up everything. The screen will return to a normal screen after the update.
Then you are ready to run with the new data.

If you have a 2002 SC, then your NAV is a Gen 2 system.
If you still have the original disc in the car (you can check the version number with a menu selection), then you have data version 1.01.
Any newer data version disc also has an upgrade to the Operating System itself. Once the OS is upgraded, the system will not read the ver 1 data disc again.
This is also true for the Gen 3 systems in the 2003 SCs. Although the Gen 2 and Gen 3 systems have some different menu structures and different features, they both use the same data disc.
The Gen 4 and above are made by a different company and will not read those data discs at all.
The disc you show in the photo above is Ver 4, which is last year's data. My guess is that you bought that from somebody who bought the Ver 5.01 data disc which went on sale in Jan 06. If it is for the Gen2/3 systems, then it will work. Since it did not work, you probably got a disc for a Gen 4 or Gen 5 system. Trying to guess that it will work by interpreting the part number is risky, and something I have not tried.

Yes you can get them from the Lexus parts department.
I think they run about $250, but I can't recall.
Generally posters here report that the best prices are at Sewell Lexus Web pages. I have bought my two upgrade NAV discs from Sewell and excellent prices. Go to the Sewell web page, go to parts, then pick out your model and year of car and the NAV disc will be listed eventually, as well as a link to a page showing you how to install it. Or call them up; they are very helpful. All of this is available from your local Lexus parts department, also, but the price may be about $50 higher.
Call around and find out.
And don't buy one from eBay. Your chances of getting the right one are not very good.

There is an OS upgrade included from the original '02 DVD which adds some speed to searches and some new and nicer highway icons. Your maps and all the POI information relating to restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc is about 7 years old.
I would not hit the road with a 7 year old map, but that's up to you.

I was hoping the upgrade would be a little cheaper and make a good last miniute xmas gift. If I'm spending hundreds of dollars on someones car it's gonna be mine though.
I guess I'll keep looking.
Thanks for the info though. I'm going to pass it along to my parents and let them deal with it. I'm not even sure they know it can be upgraded.

Your question states the problem: you can't be sure you have the right one when you get it from a seller on eBay. These are not being sold by dealers, and are either out of date or simply misdescribed, in many instances. If you do get the wrong one or a faulty one, there is not much chance you will get your money back.
I have bought lots of things from sellers on eBay, but I would never try to get one of these NAV DVDs there. This is one instance where the odds are against you. I'd suggest you call your local dealer or check the Sewell Lexus parts web page and get it there.
Use the money you saved by buying all that other stuff on eBay.

i figured out which one i need. now i just want to know if it's worth it. how does the update compare to mapquest or google maps? they're not up to date where i live either. so if it's the same source for the info, it's probably not worth it.
by the way, i found a couple ebay listings with the exact part number and the oem lable listing it as compatible with my car, so i'm confident it's the right one. if it weren't i'd just turn around and resell it on ebay. but i don't think it would come to that.
