Default Extended Warranty Question (merged thread)

We bought a 2002 SC430 in May of 2003. It is a Lexus Certified Pere Owned.
Covered under Warranty till May 2006 or 100K miles. The milage is just over
51K. Can we still buy a platium extended warranty? If so how much?
Is it worth it? Please share your experience.

Thanks

Thumbs up Doing the same thing

Hey Man!!!
that is exactly what I am doing right now. I have gs430 2002, with 30k on it right now and the warranty expires on Apr 23rd. What I found out is that Lexus BACKED waranties are very expensive and the other warranties are risky. The Lexus backed waranty runs anywhere from 2500 to 3000k. What i also found out is that Lexus backed warranties start from the first purchase of the car, not when u buy the warranty. So weired. The lans run in 7 yr to 6 yr options. Anyother year warranty plans would be outside no Lexus Warranties. Let em know what u think about this whole ordeal.

i got the extended warranty thru a VW dealer for 1500, 5yr/100K mi, and ZERO deductible! its a 3rd party compnay, but they will cover anything and everything... but then again, this is a used car from a non-lexus dealer...

Default looking for wisdom

My 2002 SC430 just turned over to 36000 miles. My local Lexus dealer is offering a Platinum Warranty backed by Lexus which essentially would certify the car. It has a 0 deductible and if it's never used it's totally refundable.
The options I have are 3/36 for 2500, 4/50 for 3200 or 5/60 for 3500. The finance manager seemed to indicate that there was room for negotiation on the prices. Seeing that I've bought 3 Lexus's and a Maxima from them I would think I'd get some kind of deal.
Any thoughts or opinions on this? The warranty is good at any Lexus dealer in the country.

well if you don't mod your car much this might be good. also, the warranty, is it on top of your car mileage now, or is it just cumulative? that makes tons of differences. the 5/60 sounds like a good deal if it's on top of the yr and mileage you have now, especially you can get your money back after all these yrs if you don't use them.

another thing to keep in mind is of course how long you thin you are going to keep the car for

When I picked up my car from Mission Viejo Lexus, the finance manager offered me something real close. He was really pushing for it and at first it offered peace of mind but then something came to me. The car would need atleast that much money in repairs in that many years just for me to break even. What are the chances your car will need $3500 in repairs in 5 years and thats just to break even. The past 4 years with my BMW in repairs was around$2200 (some CPO warranty and some out of pocket) and I thought that was kinda excessive.

Its up to you. I see things differently because if its an easy fix, i'll probably do it myself but if your not one that is good with tools and need peace of mind, then what is sleeping at night worth to you. But just really think about what they are offering and at what price.

P.s. What do you mean if you don't use it you can get a refund? If you hit the lottery and never use it, you can get your cash back at the end of 5 years or what you don't use, they will refund? If its the second one, can they do a warranty for my car?

they mean that if you never use the warranty they refund the purchase price when the contract expires. once you use any part of it the refund is off.
i see your point and it's definitely worth balancing out. I know it ends up be a crap shoot. I suppose my next question for everyone is have they had any issues with their sc's that would warrant getting this protection?

went with the 3/36 which begins from the date of the purchase of the warranty and is backed by Lexus. good at any Lexus dealer in the US or Canada. 0 deductible Platinum Warranty. exact same warranty offered to new car buyers.
after using some of my Lexus Pursuits points it cost $2100. fully refundable if never used when the warranty expires. a good insurance move i think.

Knock on Wood. Having had 4 Lexus' since 1993, I wouldn't be inclined to buy an extended warranty. Never had any problems outside of maintenance except for some minor things like AC conderser and Fuel Pressure regulator on the ES after 150k miles. The trans finally let go at about 160k, but it had lived a hard life. I know with the SC there are some a lot of complex (and expensive) computers, etc. that could go bad, but I still believe that the reliability is excellent and wouldn't (personally) spend the money on an extended warranty.

The "Platinium Extended Warranty" is not the same as the new car warranty, which runs for four years from the in-service date.

The Platinum Warranty is the same warranty as given to buyers of CPO vehicles, which runs from 3 years from the date of purchase.

In my case, I bought a 3 year old CPO, so I have one year left of original factory warranty, and then 2 more years left on the CPO warranty (because the warranties run concurrently), but the dealer was very clear that the CPO warranty is not quite as extensive as the new car warranty, but is the same as the highest level of extended warranty, the "Platinum" version.
