Default Mileage Computer/Gas Indicator

Greetings All,

New owner of an '02 430 with what should be a simple question (but I just cant find the answer anywhere).

How accurate is the mileage computer...? And how much gas is left in the tank when the light comes on?

I'm only on my 3rd tank of gas but the light is on, the indicator is at E and the computer says 0 miles cruising range but when I fill it up it only takes 16'ish gallons???

Any clarification is greatly appreciated!

from what i read, when the light comes on you still have about 3 gallons to burn, this is for safety. so if you are at 16 gallons, at 3, that's about right i guess

but i strongly suggest against doing that, it's not good for the car. you can easily damage your fuel pump

This just happened to me...my light came on, my computer said something like "LOW FUEL", which happens after 0 miles, and I had to drive about 2 more miles to get to a gas station. My car took 17.1 gallons to fill it. However, I wouldn't recommend driving with much less than a 1/4 tank for the sake of your injectors and fuel pump.

Hey, sorry, off topic, but congrats on the new car, did you buy from Lexus or private party? Price, miles? I ask, because I'm considering getting one too!

So we get that much crud in our gas tanks and
the gas filter dosen't do a good enough job to
protect the injectors.
All this on a 65,000 dollar car?

yes i did pay for our sc430 with my own cash. i haven't relied on my parents for money since 20

seriously, i know what you are trying to say, and i know it's a 60k car. but you are talking about a system that just work as is. even go to say the sl500, i am sure if you do this often, you can damage the system too.

I didn't make my self clear. Sorry
How dose using the last 3 gallons of gas
effect the injectors. I may be wrong but I thought
that's what the fuel filter was for. I ment that a car
in this price range should do a better job of filtering
the gas before it getes to the injectors and I thinh it
dose. I've run mine down to orange warning ligh
flashinf with no problems with injectors. If Im wrong
please expain it to me. I love my SC430 I think it's
the best car I ever hand. I did not mean to make it
sound like a bad car.

ES3, hope it works out for you.

Hey thanks very much. I really appreciate your thoughts and
those of others.

Meanwhile, I'm eager to see a response to your posted questions,
I've always heard that the fuel filter is supposed to do its job, at the
bottom of the barrel, but maybe it's not designed to work with less
than 3 gallons of gas???
