Default 30 Porsches V. One SC400 (Round 2)

Last weekend I was back at Mallala racetrack with the Porsche Club. Shaved a second of my personal best with a 1:27.72. That put me about 24th out of the 30 there. It's a blast on the track alright.
Anyway I had the tape recorder in the boot for the last session - some Porsche coolant and some over zealous driving by me saw a couple of big slides but nothing major.
The sticky Bridgestone 540s semi slick tyres pick up a lot of stones - you can hear it the whole time as the stones hit the inside of the guards - no carpet in the boot for the track.
So for your listening pleasure here is 1 not so hot lap of me driving an SC400 as fast as I can.

http://planetsoarer.com/sounds/Mallalalap2.mp3

The above is the Mp3 file - about 1.3 Mb

As the seconds count up here is the blow by blow commentary:
Commentary:
At 6 seconds - entering esses Corner #6
at 14s entering start finish straight
20s - 2nd to 3rd gearchange - 80 mph
23s - brake too late for corner #1

24-26s lurid sideways slide after #1
26s - stop sliding - keep going.
35s spin tyres around corner #2
39s - 2-3gearchange at 80 mph
44s - brake for #3 southern hairpin
51s - spin tyres out of corner
1:09s brake from 120 mph for #4
1:16s spin tyres out of hairpin
1:24 change gear 2-3 at 80 mph
1:31 brake for #6
1:45 clubhouse corner onto start finish straight.

And here is a map of the track (closest thing to being there!)

That'll be my shift kit!

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ight=shift+kit

No wheel chirping with sticky race tyres and stock ECU. The chirping was with Pirelli PZero Neros and that new Harry Lemmens Programable ECU (not quite ready yet) that shifts at 7500 rpm (or 7000 or 8000 or stock depending on which pin switch you select).

Hmmm... Still undecided if i could put up with it in my daily driver. Do i get the auto tricked out, or save for a manual conversion? (or just leave well enough alone - the car is actually fast enough for me already )

What does the car sound like when driving around town? Is it loud and attention seeking? Or is that only when you are fanging around a racetrack?

Car is meek and mild with stock body and stock GS400 rims and quiet exhaust sort of - In boot with no carpet and full throttle it gets a bit sexy - but it's ok around town - just. Never had cop trouble.
Don't go the manual conversion - too hard too much money.
I am not convinced the shift kit is for me either - I do miss my smooth changes - bags of fun on track and fanging it in the wet - but I don't know - the rest of the time?
So if you don't really want a shift kit then don't - sounds like you don't really want one to me.

The manual conversion is nothing about speed, it is about enhancing the driving experience. I really miss changing gears these days, and my left hand is getting bored while i drive (as is my left foot)! If given a choice between SC and manual conversion, i would choose the manual...

The exhaust is next on my list to do...

Default Tyres

Hey pete,

You said the tyres you were using ( Bridgestone road/race ) 16's were better than your 265's?

I am running Falken Azenis 265X35X18's and am getting those for AUD230 each.

I am keen to come out with you guys next track day -you recommend sticking with the falken's or getting a set of bridgestones seeing they are the pretty much the same price (seeing i have my stock rims which i can chuck on) ?

Better wear on the bridgestones?

BTW : your car sounds awsome! I have done the 2 1/2 back from the stock resonator with the Lukey's and there is a hugely noticable difference in sound compared to yours. did you notice the change mainly with the cams or the extractors? (extractors are next on the list)

That's a great price for the Azenis - there is a higher model Falken track tyre - I saw it at Mansons Race tyres while getting my 540s - that other Falken is the 540 competitor - the Azenis is more street than the 540s.

For that price I'd consider staying with the Azenis for a while - I don't know how they would go in a direct comparision.

All parts of the exhaust affect sound. The stock front section of the exhaust muffles the sound considerably. biggest differnce in sound was headers back - then headers too of course. Fitting headers was the biggest power upgrade I have ever done to my car.
I have seen two cars with big exhausts pull an extra 10 rwkw (13rwhp) just with headers.
So fitting headers to your system will make a big difference - x-pipe also affects sound a lot.
