Default Its official guys W58 is blown up

Was doing a 1st and 2nd gear pull about a 5000k shift going up hill into second....ka-boom....went back and looked at marks on the road indicated some serious wheel hop....happened on Friday at around 7:30.....Luckily was only about 5 miles from my house

I am running 14.5 psi on the 2jzgte and it was more power than the w58 could handle....also keep in my mind it had about 170,000 miles on the transmission....it only lasted less than 1000 miles....

I first suspected that the pressure plate straps had broken off.....but after removal of transmissions.....the clutch and pressure plate were in good condition....not so much can be said for w58...

Not sure yet what I am going to do....though about trying to find a cheap w58 so I can still drive the car....or start saving up for the r154 swap.....I was planning on doing this early next year but looks like it is going to have much sooner...

When I drained out transmission fluid about a dozen or more of these pieces of teeth came out with the fluid....The fluid was jet black...fluid itself barely had 1000 miles on it....

Transmission is out and overall inspection of clutch is very good.....still looks new....

Which style r154 do I need my SC is a factory 5 spd 92...

Will the JDM r154 with tripod require a supra TT tunnel?

too much traction? Thats pretty rough. Unless you find a r154 for dirt cheap the 350z trans is a nice upgrade.

That's an awful setback! I hope you can find a new transmission soon. Less than 15 psi isn't all that much, really.

As mentioned, either the R154 or 350Z transmissions will fit the bill. An R154 in *good* condition does not shift like a "horse carriage" (sorry oldManTan) but it is slightly chunky at times. I find the R154 pretty normal in a DD. When completely cold the transmission needs to warm to its own operating temperature for about ten minutes of driving to be at its best... not all that uncommon with some manuals. Both the Z transmission or a V160 will be smooth in comparison of course.

For your 1992 the best fit is an 86-92 Supra Turbo R154 with the conversion pieces or a 91-93 Soarer R154 transmission. And the OEM Soarer extension pieces actually can still be bought, just not from any Toyota dealer outside of one physically located in Japan (i.e.: buy from an importer). You reuse your factory dust and seal boots from your W58 tunnel for a factory fit.

Tripod R154's from JDM 1994-2005 cars will require the Supra 6-speed tunnel, yes. Or the 95-97 SC 5-speed tunnel.

I did a hard 1-2 shift WOT the other day with the stock wheels and tires and it wheel hopped forever, was super lucky. The new Toyo's I put on are solid, haven't felt any wheel spin since or at least if it is the car is tracking straight. What tires are you on?

Not to hijack your thread but if you are going with a different transmission I'm interested in the shifter housing and other parts to swap my extended shifter to that kind.
