I bought my '99 Sc300 in Southern Cali and drove it home to Vegas. I didn't realize it took premium until I got home lol. But using 87 octane didn't hurt it. I only use premium now though.

Yeah gas is cheaper than it's ever been when I've been driving. 10 years ago when I was 15 I remember gas being ~$2.40 here in TX for 87, right now it's $1.70 for 87, and less than $2 for premium. It's weird taking $30 to the counter and having to go back and pick up change after I fill up, but I'm not complaining. I don't work in the oil industry so it ain't hurting me.

Newbs to cars period. Anything over a 4c, should only be filled with premium. Come on guys! The OP posted the premium and the 87 price difference... Literally talking about a difference of quarters per gallon...

But if the OP is going Turbo, this is epic irony. In fact, the only thing that could be funnier, is if he goes Turbo & still uses 87 here and there.

But to the OP, we are all just messing with you.... Just never use 87. If you do, just don't tell anyone.

Never use 87 oct in a premium designed car, as it will over a long period of time damage the emission system, use only in an emergency. If any one has noticed some gas stations sell 89 as premium & 93 as super premium. High compression engines of 10 to 1 & up should burn a higher octane fuel as you'll get valve knock if you don't, but engines with high mileage tend to lose some compression with wear. Not all of us make Booko bucks & the current millionaire I work for is very cheap! I have run 89 octane very successfully in higher mileage premium cars, my SC included, but always treat it to the best on pay day. Thank god gas prices have come down, cuz now she gets the best all the time, but if I could I'd run racing fuel!

Treat her to some Octane booster. You can get as high as 107 with the octane booster. Will be pricey if done often, but once a month should be doable.

Heck, I used to put 93 in my 4banger Camry years ago. I always felt weird getting the cheap stuff.

Same feeling as buying a Dodge Charger v6 SXT & not the SRT-8, or at least a RT. Just wouldn't feel right...

And gas is cheap... If I'm almost at a quarter of a tank, $35 fills her up on 93
I fixed your mistake

Although, I was speaking in general. But yes, anything above a 4banger.

Honestly, my dream L6 is the lengendary RB26. I will absolutely have me a car powered with one, single turbo. Whether it will go in a G35, 300zx, 240, etc, I must.... Must have that one particular I6*.

The v8 in the Lexus don't give a care what you put in them they will run and run well. The oxygen sensors can handle the lower octane just fine if not subjected to 87 as the only fuel. you may experience a slight decrease in their life span over a very long period of time but we're not talking about any time that you're going to be able to notice if you're just putting it in randomly at certain points. If you don't have something other than a stock engine, and I'm not talking of BFI mod, then you're not going to notice.

these motors have knock sensors anyway. ECU adjusts accordingly to what fuel is being used.

Interesting thread. My 93 SC400 hasn't had premium fuel since 2007. I only run regular unleaded fuel. No octane booster or anything. Right now your probably freaking out but my dad verified this an engineer for the Toyota formula 1 team that had an SC himself and with our local lexus dealer. The ECU adjusts to what fuel is being used, the only thing you may notice is a slight drop in performance off the line. Gas milage, O2 sensors and everything else will be fine. If your really worried about what gas your putting in your car then only put premium in it, but I think you will be fine running non premium fuel in your SC as long as your not trying to reenact the fast and the furious. All I can say is I've run my car with regular gas for almost 10 years now, not a single problem, and literally thousands of dollars saved!

I've run regular from time to time, hardly notice the change. The ECU indeed prevents detonation but I have noticed slightly higher gas mileage with premium, not a surprise since the timing should be more advanced with the higher octane.

I notice the new Genesis Coupe V6 is listed with 348 hp. on premium fuel, 344 with regular. Hardly an incentive to spend the extra for premium...

Unless I go broke, she's only getting 93. I don't get why folk buy v8s and use regular. If performance isn't your thing, stick to the 4-6 cylinders. Wish I would go 89! Just my thing. If you must, apparently it isn't bad....

Lexus should have labeled the ECU failsafe as Cylinder Deactivation technology or a clever variation of the name, and slapped another $5k on the price tag.
