Question Is it okay to put 89 fuel sometimes

Well over here In NY gas is at $2.75 a gallon for ultimate. So I chose to put 89 fuel at $2.53 per gallon from personal experience I know NOT TO PUT 87. .If you use that fuel your 02 sensor will go bad and you wil need to change it. So in your best interest DO NOT USE 87 because it's the cheapest can anyone share there thoughts on this topic thanks

It says right in your dash to only use premium.

Bro.... It's a v8 Lexus.

Don't skimp on the fuel. Hell, I put octane booster in my tank sometimes to get it to 105+. Runs extra good with the booster. Wish they had 100+ at the pump.

I go Premium...as instructed by Lexus. I'd stick with what Lexus says.

Sure makes it easy when gas is around $1.90 per G for premium down here!

If it's an emergency situation an all you can find is 90 or 89 (as is the case in some areas of the country) and you are concerned you will run out of fuel before your next gas stop then that's all you can do. The ECU can handle it in those situations. You should drive moderately until you can top off with at least 3/4 of premium. The car should not be driven hard or aggressively with less than premium fuel.

You should not, however, just look to save money by avoiding the use of premium fuel.

The only exception here would be the vast difference between "premium fuel" ratings which in some places (Cali) is 91, in others is 92, still others on the east coast are 93 or 94. California, for instance, used to have 92 octane as the premium grade until the late 90's.

91-94 octane at the pump is what your car was designed for.

Another thing to remember is that elevation affects combustion because air pressure decreases as you increase elevation. So at 3000 ft above sea level a 90-91 octane will act like a 93-94 octane at sea level. Typically if a gas station calls it premium, it will act like premium for the elevation you're in. Gas stations won't increase octane more than necessary for the elecation. So don't get too hung up on the octane numbers or wonder why you're city doesn't have any 94 or 93 or whatever you think you want. Just buy premium.

^^ Very true. Although aside from actual elevation changes I think in areas near sea level with lower octane fuel (such as California) it has more to do with supply and demand (and Unocal 76 selling itself off into independent franchises while holding onto some quite superior high octane patents it can't use any longer). Where a lot of premium or 89 gas is used in general it lowers the available high quality crude needed to create premium, mid-grade and regular. Raw crude without refining is somewhere near 70-75 octane. It has to be treated just to get it up to standard 87 (and who knows what runs on 86 and 85 other than lawn mowers).

A place by me sells 99 but you have to bring a funnel as the nozzle will not fit a standard fuel backflow tube.

Gas at $2.75 is actually really good right now in NY. Just two months ago it was $3.79 average... In fact all last two years it was average at $3.79, as high as $4.09 in the summer. Don't cheap out and mess up your car. Get an economy ride or motorcycle like I did. A simple Ninja 250 averages 70mpg.

I'm in NY as well, and BP gas stations have a Driver Rewards card. They take about one minute to sign up for online, just use a fake email and save 10 cents per gallon on your first fill up, then throw the card away and make another one each fill up. BP already has the cheapest gas by me, so It definitely helps, and it's free. I can't tell you how much I've saved but I've gone through over twenty cards this year alone. It works out to saving $2 each fill up, but over the course of the year I've saved at least $60.

Agreed!

Hate to be the one to say it but, if you can't afford the car, you need something more economical. Lexus instructs to only run premium fuel. Anyone who runs less is asking for problems whether it's right now or down the road!

PS. Didn't you just buy $1,000+ coilovers and now you're not wanting to put premium fuel in your car? Priorities man, priorities.

Yeah, yeah. Gas wise, a v6 should be treated as a v8 and vice versa. Premium is premium.

Heck, I used to put 93 in my 4banger Camry years ago. I always felt weird getting the cheap stuff.

Same feeling as buying a Dodge Charger v6 SXT & not the SRT-8, or at least a RT. Just wouldn't feel right...

And gas is cheap... If I'm almost at a quarter of a tank, $35 fills her up on 93
