Default Power Mirrors

Folks,

1995 SC400 with 138,000 miles and completely stock. My power mirrors stopped working. All fuses are good and everything else on the car works just fine. Any ideas? I appreciate any and all responses. Happy Holidays!!!

Search for mirror ECU and there are a couple of extensive threads to leverage. That little sucker is behind the gauge cluster and takes some acrobatics to reach the two fasteners that hold it to the bracket.

My mirrors are out as well and I have not yet attempted to get to the mirror ECU to swap it out; check on eBay to see what is available from salvages. A new mirror ECU from Toyota (last time I looked) was not cheap.

Thanx Duck! I did a little research and this seems to be a common issue. They are $300 new. OUCH! I feel sketchy about getting a used one for fear it will just die soon after replacement. Maybe for now I will just deal with it.

I have the same issue come to find out some how the power wire lost connection which caused it to stop working..
Quoted: somewhere in the $2xx dollar range to fix it.

(Let's just say I'm doing fine without it lol)

Found a used one with 1yr warranty for less than $30 shipped.

I plan to do a hookup test first. The full swap would require removing speedo-cluster.

I plan to open up the old (if the swap works out) to see what is inside. Hopefully it is a leaking cap . Since the circuit does not get exercised that much, my suspicion is that it would be an electrolytic cap.

Any one else peeked in there?

Removing the old one was a pain .. the top screw. had to remove the speedo and then reach for the screw blindly ... need to add a 10mm ratcheting flexible wrench to my tool set. Took a bit longer with the standard box wrench.

Put the used part in and the mirrors are operational. Did not put the top screw in ... yet to find out if the instal will rattle.

Opened up the old (failed) part. Simple as bending 5 ears back and taking 4 screws out.

The board has 6 electrolytic caps. All looked good visually.

Pulled the first one out and it checked ok.

Pulled the second one out and lo and behold meter shows no capacitance. This cap is the short plump light green one. Marking say NEC 5.5V FR 0.047F yep that would be 47000uF.

Is that the only problem? Cant say.
