The SC400 I almost bought
Luckily I got my 98, but this SC is gorgeous. The con's listed below are just bolt on pieces.
My 98 just made 100k mikes, this one has under 90. Comes with 2 decent set of wheels & the price is negotiable. This guy has had this car for sale here in Chicago for MANY, MANY MONTHS.
As I said, I'm glad I have my 98, but it cost almost 4x as much.
Thoughts?

Don't look back. You got the "cream of the crop" for stock Sc's. If you got this, you would have doubts you made the right choice. It would cost big money to get a stock 98-Sc to the power you make now. It would probably be impossible to get the 5 speed auto you have.
Just enjoy your beautiful, rare Sc.

Funny thing is, when I first decided to look into SC4's on Craig's L, I didn't know the major difference's between the pre 98's & the 98+'s. When I saw the SC I have now, the previous owner noted it being the 1st year with a gated 5sp and VVT-i.
So that already sounded special to me, so I pursued the car. saw it in person, loved it. Offered $5K and didn't get her until I found out how rare it is, & offered what he wanted. So I am happy. The Borla Mufflers are quiet, but sounds good when you get on it.
However, for the price of the 97 listed about ($3500 obo), some Sc4 lover will gladly ****** it up. If my fiancé didn't complain about the back room & how low it sits, I would get it for her. The nerve she has picking on my baby!

Edit* I don't like the hesitation I get at times from the auto. If I floor it, sometimes it won't go as low as I would want, but sometimes it does, so basically if you want to get through the gears decently, you gotta shift the 5sp from 1st on up, which is kinda fun

Right. Thought the 98's where 290? Don't tell me my moms 2013 Maxima SV has more HP? Lol.
And since I plan to keep this forever, I want to do a N/A build. Heads, Cams, Rods, etc. Higher compression and a 5spd. I hear these 4.0's rev a lot higher than they're limited to stock, safely!

Dunno how much HP that represents but from what I read, not much for the money. I'd enjoy that 290, slap in a manual and you will love and feel the 290 even more. 290 + manual is creeping up on Soarer territory. you want speed next? Just find an already (properly) boosted Sc300 for 6-8K next for a weekend toy. You could even keep the 400 automatic if you get a boosted 5 speed. Personally, I love my auto after a few days in the city with a manual, and I love the manual after a few days in the auto.

#Touché my friend. Best post I've read in here. Chicago would suck in a Manual honestly...
I was just looking at a couple boosted 300's for around that!
But question, why do some people swap down to a 1j????!

You probably know this but just in case, the 1J is a 1JGTE. The "T" stands for turbo just like in the 2JZGTE. The stock 2J in an Sc300 is a 2JZGE. No "T" no turbo.
It's not a swap down really. There actually IS a replacement for displacement in this case. It's called BOOST! ;-)

There is much more to it than slapping on a turbo. If it were that easy, everyone would have one. Depending on setup, big power requires supporting mods. If you want 400-500hp+, you might need to install Arp studs, TT head gasket, injector upgrade, BOV, Wastegate, oil lines FMIC + piping , FFIM, exhaust, turbo, downpipe, manifold, management/ECU a stronger tranny and preferably an LSD. I'm just starting to understand this so others please chime in if I have something wrong.
