Default Trunk won't STAY closed

Now I know majority of the trunk threads are about trunks not staying open, or trunk struts being bad. Well mine is different. About a week after I got the car, I replaced the trunk struts because like most of us, they were shot. I bought the ones that were meant for the vehicle WITHOUT the spoiler since I have a SC w/o the spoiler. My issue now is keeping the trunk latched shut. The car sits in the garage fine, meaning the trunk won't open by itself. But when I start driving and attempt to go over a bump, railroad crossing, road construction, etc., the damn trunk flies open. It's like the trunk has so much pressure on it to open with new struts that the latch can't keep it shut. It's annoying as hell, especially when you go out to dinner at a nice restaurant, like tonight, and pull up to the front, go over speed bump and there goes the trunk.
I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue, or if you think maybe the latch is bad. I searched and of course all that came up was about trunks NOT opening due to bad struts. I'm getting really frustrated as I had to stop 3 times on my way home to close it as well.
Thanks in advance!

p.s. This is on the 1995 SC300 btw.

Jason

i've never looked at the mechanism but it's probably a spring or something that moves away which opens the latch. try looking at the mechanism inside the trunk itself. pull the carpet forward and you should be able to see it clearly, if not then the black plastic piece on top of it. i've never looked at it myself, so you might be the first to figure thiss out if you do. let us know how it goes and good luck, sorry if i wasn't much help.

Which trunk struts did you buy? I know I bought mine from Strongarm I believe and they said W/Spoiler which is what I have. Mine don't pop up like yours but when I pop the trunk it opens extremely fast, it would hurt if you were hit with it. Maybe they made a batch and screwed up?

Still wouldn't be able to undo the trunk latch. I would definitely check the trunk latch, test it with a metal hook and see if it holds the hook fine or if it slides off when applying pressure.

Well I fooled around with the latch this morning. I pulled it apart and noticed something looked off. It seemed to be missing the spring that keeps the pressure on the latch part of the mechanism when the trunk is in the locking position. I was puzzled, but tried to come up with ways to find another spring. I decided to look around the trunk and under the carpet liner that protects the latch, and sure enough under it all was the tiny inch long spring. I put it all back together and drove the car for the day and all is well! Thanks for the suggestions!
