I have an SC300 with 160k miles that needs several thousand dollars of repair to get it back into the shape it was when I bought it. (seats, dent repair, transmission, ball joints, etc.) I plan on going through with the repairs, doing a little bit at at time, because this is my dream car. I searched and saved for months, and got exactly what I wanted, all the way down to the color combination. So to me, it's worth fixing. Hopefully it will last me a lifetime....

Will you continue to maintain and fix your car when it has 300k miles? 400k? At what point would you scrap your ride and buy a lower mileage SC?

I think you have already your question. If you have enough discipline to save it, then you have the energy and time to continue your efforts on getting it fixed.

I answered the question for me, but what I'm trying to ask is, what's that point for everyone else. How far are you willing to go to keep your car on the road? Just trying to start a conversation. Maybe I didn't word that well enough.

I would probably fix it and maintain it as long as there is no frame damage or rear quarter panel damage.
If either of those 2 happen its all going into another 92-95 SC300. Mileage, not so important to me.

I just bought one that needs excessive repair, but I am up for it, only paid $700 (surprisingly the needles arent burnt out)

The issue I see with going to another SC, is you are unaware of any issues it may have. You may find yourself in a worse scenario than spending the extra time and money to fix the known issues you have now. I sent you a PM also.

I paid 700 as well, and sure there are things to fix, sure there will be time involved, but I've wanted one of these lil bastards ever since I owned an LS. It's a historic vehicle and as long as it's not a scrapper or salvage, it's worth it. Just imagine you paid 3k for it. You have 2300 bucks still to spend to get it there, once your ther you might want to say 5k then you'll spend the money to get it there. Moral of the story is what's the car worth to you, for some here it's a part of their lives, and it's hard to put a price on that.

I've had mine for a little over a month now. I love the car so much I plan on keeping it for many years. Currently I'm redoing the brakes right now. Then a couple other things and next year I'm going to get it repainted. I paid cash for it and it's my third car so it won't get many miles put on it. Plus it's nice not having a car payment. It has 128,000 miles so I could keep it till I hit 300-500k. But after the engine dies I could just rebuild it.

I just got a SC400 about a month ago. I paid top $ over kbb dealer price from a member here. I was very happy with it. It's not "How much you paid for it". It's "How much it worth to you". I didn't have to do major fix (knock on wood) to it. I plan to spend extra $2500-3000 to it if needed.

i got my sc300 for a deal .
owned it for about 2 months and im at 190k miles.
but i dont plan on letting SChannel go anytime soon.

Keep that one. Like someone said, you know exactly what it needs. And unless you have another very specific car in mind....it means you've still got a soft spot for the one you've got.

Yeah usually maintain, fix and keep for me its also good to know what was done before so there are no surprises down the road. Good thing these cars are so reliable!

Tally your expected repair costs - and then find a car with much less mileage that's been well taken care of. If the cost is less, buy the car. If it's more, then determine if it's worth the extra cash.

In the case of doing all the repairs you would have all new parts, and know the car better.


low mileage doesn't mean it was well taken care of. my SC I bought has 130k on it, I would say thats low mileage.. it was far from taken care of and I bought it cheaply knowing that.


but I take all this as an experiment to learn.
