Its a niche car by todays standards. RWD no good in the winter and if your A.C. needs worked on ouch. Premium gas and weak leather. Its a HOBBY to restore these cars to whatever level the owner chooses, but getting your investment back short term could be a problem. That said Id rather have my money in this car, than a boat, motorcycle, golf clubs, etc.

^^ Yep... I suppose the value solution here other than the MKIV Supra chassis is to just pick any other semi-valuable front-engine RWD to use a 2JZ NA-T or any GTE engine swap in: 70's 240Z, Delorean (it has been done despite the rear engine layout), 60's Mustang or Camaro, etc.

The SC is a strange case. I think it would have been different if Lexus hadn't crippled it so from the factory.

Then again... the 840 and 850 & CSI values vary greatly today. Very nice and advanced car like the SC with unusually low asking prices except for the very highest spec of the range in perfect condition. Repairs for them are easily worth more than the vehicles themselves.

Sad truth about our boats ...they don't sell good at the price we want. Only people who don't do their research pay good money for them.

quoting what StudioGeek said on a for sale ad at Lexus Vehicle Classified

And this is for a Black 1997 SC300 in running condition .. just the freaking body kit with fogs, grille and tail lights sell for at least $1k on the Parts Classified and yet the car won't sell at $2k that quick. The white DWP that was being sold for $2500 is already being parted out.

It simply confirms what has been said all along. You can buy these SC cheap . Buyers have many choices that is why they go a dime for a dozen.

The trouble is cosmetic replacement parts, especially with the interiors, although ebay and forums are a good source for now so long as there are still many SC's in circulation. When such time comes that there aren't, we'll see. The inability to call Toyota/Lexus for reproduction parts the way you can call up National Parts Depot for 1964-73 Mustangs and classic Camaros makes it a harder proposition.

You can still do that now but the time will come. Popular as they are, original interior parts and body panels for AE86's are already near sold out for most things, as has been alluded to by one member here on the CL forums who was restoring his 86.

It just doesn't make much sense that with the extreme ubiquitousness and popularity of ALL 2JZ (and 1JZ) engines as single turbo project motors the few chassis that had them from the factory remain less valuable than the drivetrains themselves. This is true for older 70's-90's Mustangs and Camaros as well I suppose, only even those cars with less quality can have higher values despite there being many, many, many more of them in circulation.
