And this is why SC owners rock! We look after our own!

T2, crazy as it sounds, the car gods were looking after you. I know you wanted to bank on the good parts from that SC, but it just seemed a little too "caveat emptor" to me. I had an '88 Pontiac GTA Notchback (yes, a real one fir those if you that remember that option... Google it if you don't and then giggle at the excess of the 80's). That was a case of buying my dreams with logic nowhere in sight.

And my first SC had so many issues wrong with it, it was more an example of what to avoid rather than what to look for. I think you dodged a bullet, my friend.

Well, I've come up with a handful of additional items I would have liked to have taken off the car... But yeah, I dodged a headache for sure, albeit a potentially [slightly] profitable one if I went with Plan B of treating it as a parts car with no intent to register and resell it.

I've been trying to talk this yard owner down that's down the street from me for a while. he has a black sc400, I'm unsure of the year i cant remember of the top of my head but i think its a 94. his mechanic has not been able to get this car running, the timing is off, and its been sitting in this lot for at least 2 years, when i talked to him about it he showed me around and it has a cluster with all working needles, a tan interior that looks like no ones really touched, a telephone that turns on and everything and the climate control isn't bled out. even with it not running he wants 1200$ for it because that's how much he got it for at auction. It would only be a parts car for me but I'm unsure what would be a good price for it.

Just buy it. At that price, a few bucks here and there is a fairly big percentage difference. If he's sat on it that long, he's in no rush to take a loss. And since it's just a parts car, you don't care about the running condition, so you shouldn't have any problem getting your money's worth out of it.

To the first question, I would have bought it. I don't like taking chances but that would be a chance I'd take. Frame damage? So what. Ugly as a poodle? So what. I'd use it for my DD. It can go for another 200k if maintained and since I/we know these cars it would have worked well. IMAO, you should have bought it, but then again, I wouldn't let a 2k 2000 SC pass by.

3+ weeks later, it's available again. Search Portland, OR craigslist for "2000 SC 300". Exact same price and mileage, still WA license plates, and with no indication that any of the problems have been fixed. (The photos cleverly cut off just before the main trouble areas.)

I found it quite odd that they took the ad down after I visited that evening, seeing as how it was after hours. We were stuck in traffic trying to get there and they were close to closing up shop already. It's unlikely that someone else squeezed in that evening to buy it. The place was pretty shady, and I feel like they don't want anyone sniffing around their cars and not buying. What they'd be hiding, I'm not sure. Wait for suspicions to subside then re-list? It was listed as a private sale last time, too -- I didn't know it was a dealer until finalizing a time to go take a look -- but I tossed my notes and don't remember if the phone number is the same.

The only other scenario that makes any sense is someone actually did buy it, then realized there's too much wrong with it to try fixing it up, let alone be worth registering in state, and is selling it for what they paid, having put zero mileage on it.

At any rate, buyer beware! Something ain't quite right.

People put the dumbest stuff in their ads. I can only assume there are equally dumb people reading it, being appropriately impressed by the dumb claims.

yes! 2000 scs are awesome, but a lot of the desirable parts are in no good condition. the body panels are what people really want from 97+.
did you even take it for a drive or anything?
how did the engine bay look?
and would you really want to trust someone shady like that? for all you know the engine could blow up 10 miles down the road and you would never get that money back.
just take your time and don't settle.
its worth paying 7k for a super clean car instead of 2k for a cheap beat up car. It is a lot of work to make the 2k car look as good as the 7k car.

my grandmother always told me "you start with junk, you end up with junk"

you would spend wayyyyyy ,more than 5 k to get it looking like a 7k car
