Question Speedometer/Odometer Non-functional

Hey guys I drive an 84 300zx which I love but wanted to upgrade from the 80's just a little bit so I just bought a 97 SC300 which makes this the third japanese car (79 rx7, 84 300zx, now a 97 soarer!!) from each decade I will be driving Yay! (2jz engine and chassis and same weight as the supra got me sold on it...!) and my speedometer and odometer are completely non functional (Which I already knew about). The guy took the car down from $5,000 to $4000 for me because he needs to get rid of it, bought it from a registered automotive seller. After researching the VIN# I saw mileage in 2006 was 81K...2009 was 97K... and has been in a garage since but been driven every once in a while, which the pics make that a legit story. I knew it might cost a grand to repair after calling a local Lexus Dealer and I am fine with that, but if there is another solution I am all ears...

Here is the story I got "Told"... The speedometer went out at around 100K two years ago along with the odometer. The manager said he called Lexus locally in Florida where he is located and got quoted $995... I then called Lexus here in Memphis, and got quoted $1000.00 before labor to replace the whole cluster...the guy said he took it to a smaller repair shop and they deemed it "Un-repairable" which is when he then called Lexus.

So I have done some research and all that and I am in the middle of probably moving so I am trying to coordinate this as fast as possible. The car is being shipped to me probably in a week which is cool, however if I am gonna be going down the Interstate I sure as hell need to know how fast I am going lol.

I know it might just need the gauge replaced, but as far as the speedometer I am seeing more "Cluster Failure" related problems to that scenario.

I am just wondering if anyone would be able to kindly give any insight if at all possible, as it would be very much appreciated... Thanks!!!

Give Tanin a call.

http://www.taninautoelectronix.com/

They're a Club Lexus vendor and I believe deal in odometer/speedometer repair and calibration among other things. I'm getting my repaired HVAC unit back from them tomorrow.

From personal experience i suggest doing extensive research before taking your car to any kind of shop and try to AVOID the lexus dealership at all cost. Leave that as your very last option. I had 1 job done at a lexus dealer and my entire car started making rattling and other noises that it did not make before taking it to them. I took the car to them multiple times to point out the issue but they said that my water pump is going bad and will need to be replaced, quoted me $996. I did NOT replace the water pump and have been driving the car for 2.5 years and the waterpump is still fine. They lie through the *** to get your money.

To get back on topic, i second the Tanin option. I have yet to use their services but they seem to have great reviews. My cluster lighting is starting to go out and needles are starting to stick so i will probably be contacting them in the near future once i have the funds to send in my cluster.

Best of luck

We can order and program a cluster to your vehicle mileage and have it shipped to you for less than half of what you were quoted.

Thank you guys very much for all your help as this seems a great solution. I am also very wary of dealers and the games they like to play so this information is very much appreciated!!

-Thank you!

Lextech can repair both the speedo and tach for a low price, like $40 each. Add the cost of new bulbs and shipping both ways and you almost double that. HOWEVER, be prepared to be without them for a long time. Their quoted turnaround time is a joke. Mine took 10 weeks, not the 3-5 days on the website.

Next time I will send it elsewhere, but they did fix them. You have to decide if the frustration is worth it.

The RPM/MPH issue is not always a 100% fix. Sometimes they must be replaced as a whole.
