Does not lock by key fob or by window switch button or both?

your brother sold you a lemon

There are little plastic clips that hold the actuator rods in the right place. My guess is they are broken, and putting things in a bind or not making contact at all. Parts are like 2 bucks

Probably out of its slot inside the door panel. Happened with my handle, ended up breaking it and had to get another one.

Well it was free as a graduation gift so can't complain. A car is still a car even if it needs a lot of work. And plus I'm in love with this car. Did you guys mean the two little plastic thing with the long wire hooked behind the door handle. Earlier one of those popped out and my passenger door wouldn't open. Popped it back in and door worked again. Is the other one for the locks.

There are cables that connect to the interior handle to the lock piece itself. It might have broke or fallen off if someone was behind the panel at some point. Lucky. Your brother is awesome!

+1 for broken lock cable stuff.
The cable ends (like all of the plastic) are prone to crack. once they are loose, the cable bends instead of pushing the lever in the latch mechanism.
also, does it not lock? unlock? or both? what if you manually flip the lock lever on the handle?
A bad actuator will likely cause a total failure, but only electrically (remote/power lock button) while you can still manually flip the lock. A bad cable can sometime function OK in one direction, but not in the other (lock vs unlock)

Well on the passenger side it would go back when I push it to lock. And when I use my key out side it wouldn't budge. Here's the pics the two plastic thing behind the door seems okay. Maybe the wire or something else is wrong.

in the 2nd and 3rd pictures it looks like the sleeve has come undone from the ferrule on the lock cable which might cause your problem. could also be broken at the lock assembly in at the door jamb too.
With the handle out like you have it, try locking and unlocking and see if the cable sleeve shifts. it should not move at all other than flex a little. the black sleeve on the outside of the cable maintains the set distance between the two ends allowing the inner cable to actually do work.
try manipulating the cable as well when your testing to see if it gets easier or harder to lock/unlock.
finally, unclip the lock cable from the handle assembly (white ended cable) and then try the key on the outside of the door to lock unlock. if it now locks/unlocks smoothly, like it should, then the cable is bad.

So what do you guys recommend should I change the whole thing. Since this car has 292000 miles already. Is there a diy on changing the lock actuator.
