Default Ultimate Hyperblink Fix for 97+ Tail Retro

I'll start by saying that all of the credit for this fix goes to "smigu" for figuring this out. Since his post was buried in another thread for the same topic here, I wanted to make it easier for future searchers to find this, and to also provide some confirmation that it works.

Instead of replacing or modding the capacitor in the flasher relay as referenced in the above thread, this fix uses two 4148 diodes that can be purchased in a 10-pack at Radioshack for just about $2. While the capacitor method works, it results in faster-than-normal blinkers and slower hazards. This fix borrows the signals from the hazard pulse so the timing is factory unless ALL of the bulbs are burnt out.

Here's a pic of the modded flasher next to a stock one. Be sure none of the contacts touch anything else, and note which direction the striping of the diodes are oriented.

An up-close shot of the wiring:

The end results:

The only drawback to this fix is that you won't know if/when a bulb goes out, but that can be remedied by installing all new bulbs and then checking them periodically. Alternatively, there is a fix using resistors, and another using the wiring of extra bulbs, but those solutions aren't as clean IMO.

It's also worth mentioning that this fix won't affect the lamp failure warning on the gauge cluster from the rear brake lights being short a bulb on both sides. I hope to tackle that issue in the near future.

Now these are the threads that I like to read.

Ok stupid question, will this work on 95-96 tails? Thats what I have now, and this fixed.

The method will theoretically work on any year, but I believe the flasher relays are different, and you would need to figure out how the wiring relates. The Toyota part number for the 92-94 relay as pictured in this thread is 81980‑24020, and the one for the 95-96 models is 81980‑12070. Pending it has 5-pins like the older ones, the wiring should be similar. I know the 97+ models have a 3-pin relay.

it could work on 95-96 as they have the same number of turn indicators.
95 and 97 tails only differ in the amount of bulbs used for the brake lights, so if it defeats that portion of the brake light indicator also as the post says where all the bulbs must be burned up then it should work also.

95 and 96 module you can also just take the brake light bulb out of the cluster, there is no hyperblink if you have a 95 module with 97 tails. if you have your original 92 module then yeah I would go for it and do it.

Heressssss a stupid question... Would just getting a 95 flasher relay do the same thing? I have a 93 running 95 tails and there's a local scrapped 95 that I can grab parts off of. Nice find btw, been wondering how to tackle this issue.

Unfortunately, no. The flasher relay got switched to a different style with less pins after '94 and are setup for less bulbs in the flasher circuit. I've read that a '97+ relay will work in the 95-96 models, but us 92-94 guys have to go with a more difficult solution.

This mod is fantastic I just put 95 tails in my 93. I was nervous about doing this because i've never tried soldering anything, but this only took about 10 minutes and was ridiculously easy and works great. All it took to motivate me to do it was being pulled over today so an officer could "check my lights" (run my tags and license because of out of state tags). Glad I did it though, thanks.
