Default ECU bad capacitor issues?

Trying to get an idea of how wide spread the capacitor issue is on various models/years. Have you had problems related to leaking capacitors in your OEM ECU?

Widespread, no. An issue that affects a reasonable percentage of cars? Yes. That's why LLS put the option in the store of repairing them because it was a question that came up enough that they decided to do it.

I think people who haven't had capacitor issues either have a newer car (98+) or just haven't looked inside their ECU yet. Just about any vehicle from the 90s will have leaking capacitors by now, particularly the Japanese imports. For some reason the US cars seem to have fewer ECU problems. Then again, they are the ones building them to live under the hood and not inside the car...

Not that I can tell but I haven't looked. I hope not but I'll probably get DM to service my factory ECU anyway soon to be safe.

No, but I've had 2 late model SC's as my last ones, both with relatively low mileage. I could see it being an issue on my '95 which had a hesitation issue.

I voted 'NO', but a more accurate answer would have been ,,, I dont know .. I would suggest adding a third option in the poll for members like me, who dont even know that there can be or is a problem.

I was surprised to find out the previous owner had to replace the ECU around 2010.
Seems more of a year than mileage issue.

Only he paid $1200 to get a new one instead of getting the caps replaced!

Rarely do caps swell and show damage or leak excessively out the bottom to the point they create a puddle. Most caps erode at the legs on bottom and you can't see it until you remove the caps from the board. Most people think of the image below, but it is actually more rare to blow one out like this in a lower power application. These types of explosions are in power supplies and high load units.

The one's that erode at the legs underneath in low power applications occasionally give just a slight hint they are failing.

I would say that this issue is most common on the SC 300 ecu. As I've owned 3 SC 300 and 2 of them have had the ecu replaced. The daily black 93 has had as many as 3 ecus changed out due to bad capacitor.

As was just explained, there is no check due to the caps behavior physically. if you have issues related to possible ECU issues (search) then rebuild it.
