Default obd2 96+ vin question becuase i live in ca and smog check sucks

since this is more of a ob2 question i think I'm posting in the right place but here we go so lets all be honest for all of us in CA. if we have a swapped car we just pay someone to illegally pass smog.

the new smog rule is they will use a obd2 reader that will read the vin from my obd2 port. how does the obd2 show vin? is it stored in the ecu? what if i replaced my ecu because the stock one failed?

reason why i'm posting this is because i have a 1996 obd2 sc300 and as of now everyone that use to help me out does not want to get PAID BIG BUCKS to smog pass my car and i offered a good chuck "couple hundreds" i don't blame them at all but I'm just trying figure this out.

i have a 2jzgte r154 swap that i want to put in the car but since jan 1st for this new smog rule I'm kinda holding off.

That sucks, smog regs can be a PITA. I imagine that Cali would want you to go to the dealer if your ecu died and that way they can program yu vin into the ecu, but that seems like a ridiculous process. That is also assuming that the ecu's are able to record vin's. Its probably just a propagansa campaign, but good luck with your search.

I don't not believe the ECU store the VIN number at least on the sc its not stored. Maybe the newer cars with transponders the VIN number might be stored so they know what code is in used to start the car. This is just a guess with what the guy is saying about the VIN number being stored on the ecu.

My scanner pulls up the VIN when I scan cars... although I have never tried in my 97 SC. I can try this weekend and report back. But like others have said, I didn't know they could transfer a VIN to/from an ECU...
