Time for an update. I've been inundated with inquiries about how the research is going and I've got it down pat I believe. All I have tried have been successful.

Here's an example of some changes below. I've beefed the caps up from 25 v to 50 v so they are completely impossible to get hot and overload now. You can see the huge difference in how much better they are. They are the same uf, just higher voltage which means beefier and more heavy duty. I'm still doing a complete rebuild of the board components in most cases, but many improvements are designed in.

Here is before and after on the tach for the caps. Keep in mind the caps are not actually what need to be replaced here, but we have seen how they can cause issues when they are older (ECU ring a bell?) so as with everything I am in it needs to be bulletproof as possible.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

OK, so you can see how I have beefed the caps up to higher tolerance. They will handle heat better AND last longer than the stock caps so this should be a one time only deal. They will never need replaced again after I have modified it. Partially because they are twice as stout as needed in this application and partially because this car won't exist at 40 years old. Sure a few will, but let's be real, yes? Ok so a permanent fix here with the modifications and all new parts.

When you rebuild this and the computer chip comes out, you have to charge the caps before installing them with the computer chip out, then charge the pins properly (in the correct order) when you stick the chip back in or you will kill the chip since it is a mosfet gate chip. The caps will spike the chip. It has to be done perfectly. The gates in the chip will just fry if the caps charge through the chip and spike the gates.

I wanted to update this since I finally ran across a cluster with a bad MAIN mobo instead of a bad motor mobo. This is one out of more than 20 or so. I will have to keep track of if this happens again so we have a failure rate study, but as of now it is still a one time thing. I'm also trying to keep up with it myself so posting here.

I'm willing to pay to have my cluster restored. I have a 92 with 190k or so and tach and Speedo are dead. And one needle is dead.

I couldn't find a website. Is this gentleman the one on eBay advertising repairs where you send him the cluster?

So I found the site and made an inquiry. If I'm able to use his services I'll do a before and after.

My 1993 SC300 (112,000 mi.) tach stopped working for a day or two (needle not moving), then was working fine yesterday.

Comments?

Yes my comment would be why did you post three threads on it and bump this one with the same comment of the other threads. The thread is pretty clear.

the chip just went kaput? maybe a cap or something on the power line isn't doing its job or shorted it. you are right that seems a bit odd of a failure.
its probably a lm2907 or 2917 from a quick search.
