Default Install Sachs Gas Charged Lift Supports SG429002

I just installed a pair of Sachs gas charged lift supports in my SC300. I followed the instructions posted in the thread

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...threadid=54182

Thanks howiedoit, good job. I suggest that anyone attempting this job read and follow his instructions.

When installing the Sachs lift supports you will need a 12mm wrench to remove the OEM ball studs and a 1/2" wrench or deep socket to install the Sachs ball studs (strange, but true). The OEM ball studs are installed with Lock-Tite, so be very carefull when removing them. The passenger side isn't bad because you are pulling up against the lid stop. But on the driver side you are pushing down (closing the lid), so be very sure that your support is secure and the lid doesn't close on you. In fact, I couldn't break the stud loose. I finally wedged the wrench over the stud and under the lid. I gently closed the lid and it provided leverage to loosen the stud. (I didn't have a "pipe extension" with me.) You can see the wrench in this picture.

Another poster wrote that he couldn't find the rubber bumpers that howiedoit refered to. Here are two pictures of them. As howiedoit said, be sure to remove them to install the new lifts. When you reinstall them, be sure the inner stub goes in the hole in the lid hinge arms. Also notice that I have almost removed the ball stud.

Rubber bumpers:

When you remove the trunk liner, not only do you have to pull the liner out at the top

you also have to remove two fastners at the bottom

Here's a photo of the OEM (lower) and Sachs lifts (upper). The Sachs probably won't last as long, but they will be easier to replace because the ball socket will snap off the ball stud without removing the stud. Also, the OEM cost $130 and the Sachs cost $16.47 - EACH.

I suggest installing both lifts while you have the liner out. You don't have to save the brass colored clips on the OEM lifts. The Sachs lifts have their own clips attached. Don't forget to reinstall the rubber bumbers onto the lid hinge arms.
