Took out my Cd player because it doesn't work and found this.
What is it? I thought it was the amp but didn't see any cables attached.
Thanks!

Looks like rust might want to take care of that soon.

Black box is the vent for the trunk area, if you take it out you'll see a pivoting door that helps relieve air pressure in the trunk when you close the trunk lid. There's on on the left side as well.

I believe the tube is the water drain from the moonroof.

The reddish stuff is bad.

Yup it's supposed to equalize the pressure in the car

Like others have said, it is a "Air Box" of sorts that will allow the pressure to equalize. I was under the impression they were there for the airbags, so when the airbags deployed, your windows would not blow out lol. Not sure if that is true, but it makes sense in my mind.

Not the best pics, but you can see there is just a hole in the chassis.

Thanks,
Rick

As Raine/member has stated the black box/vents are located on both the left and right sides of the Sc's trunk.

This is correct, they are on both sides.

The one on the right side on my car kind of imploded itself open. The car was never accidented. Must have been some weird air pressure change that made it implode lol. The plastic is dented inwards and you can see inside it, there's nothing inside. I always wondered what it was but now I'm not worried about it.

In my 97 SC300 I only have one one the left side of the trunk. Right side doesn't have one nor the hole in the body for it. Car never in accident. Very strange.

Bringing this thread back as I have a question for you guys. As I have stated I only have one of these on the left side of my trunk. The right side doesn't have one. I really would like to remove the left side one as I have a battery that needs to go there. I was just going to make a patch for the hole then cover with deadening material. My trunk already "vents" as my subwoofer has been removed. Any positive or negatives from you guys on this??

Cars without airbags have them too. I believe it was designed to help shutting doors more smoothly. There's a lot of air pressure built up when a door is closing.

Mine also includes an overflow drain tube from the gas lid area.
