Default R154 with Tripod doesn't fit into 92 SC300...Why?

I need help understanding what's going on here.

The car:
1992 SC300 Originally 5sp.
1.5JZ swap with goodies.

I broke the W58 a few weeks back and have been waiting for parts to arrive. Friday was my lucky day!!

My mistake / misunderstanding:
CLAIM:The R154 with tripod will bolt up to the xJZ motor in and SC300.
RESPONSE:While the R154 does bolt up, the original hole in the tranny tunnel intended for the w58 shifter is about 3 inches forward of where the R154 wants to poke through.

I spent about 30 minutes deliberating on whether I wanted an extra hole in my car... well I always did wanna use a holesaw!! Shortly after that decision...NEW HOLE!!!

I was super proud of myself... the trans was perfectly centered and everything!!!
Moments later I found myself wondering why the trans didn't go all the way up into the tunnel and found the body of the shifter housing hits the top of the tranny tunnel when the rear trans mount is in place. So with a little hope, I ended up extending the original shifter hole to a length of nearly 8-9 inches to try and accomodate the shifter housing, but I now realize that my shifter will be so tall if I leave it installed like this. For that reason, I'm convinced the trans has to sit lower (the shifter mount is inside the car!!!!).

So my question is: WHAT THE HELL? Is this trans supposed to fit in the car or what? Is there a difference between the early and late SC tranny tunnels?

If your car was automatic. The hole would line up. Non tripod r154 would fit in your car with no cutting.

@DoomLight:

Are you saying the tranny tunnel in the Automatic SC is taller?

The hole in the automatic sc is further back. No cutting needed.

I believe that is incorrect.. I had to cut mine twice, one for the original mkiii R154 and another hole for the R154 out of the Soarer. I had to cut two different places for mine to work. None of the two worked in my car with either tranny through the factory hole. Mine was also a automatic.

Why did you go back and forth between the mkIII r154 and the soarer R154?

The extended shifter on the MKIII was crazy. It was crazy shifting through the gears. First didn't always want to go in all the time, had to hold it. Now with the soarer it shifts and runs perfect.

Do you think the MKIII R154 shifter would line up with the manual trans 92-94 body?

The 92-94 sc300 transmission hole is different than the 95+. That's the year they switched over to the newer tripod style tranny. On my car, since it was a 93 auto, they cut the whole top of the transmission tunnel and made a plate with the new hole so my mk4 supra w58 tranny (tripod style) can fit.

If you car is original 5 pseed car, the mk3 with Soarer shifter housing would have been pNP, or the first Gen soarer R154s.

All the autos have the same tunnels same shifter linkages, So if you have an auto car with and putting a 2nd Gen R154 (with the Tripod) you still have to cut the open the original auto hole.

both of these posts.

i put the tripod style transmission in my car from a soarer and had to cut about 3 inches back, widen about a half inch and forward about an inch. still trying to figure out a solution to cover the hole, but the shifter still sits in the car like factory and its actually a little bit lower.

I think I may have to just make a big hole in the tunnel to fit this R154 (with tripod) in my early (92-94) SC3 even though it was a 5sp originally.

SO the consensus is:

92-94 SC300 5sp - Takes a MK3 R154 with no cutting.
95+ SC300 5sp - Takes the Soarer / chaser R154 with no cutting.

Can any of you guys please make a statement similar to above that covers the following configurations (I'm not sure if they are different) just to make sure the information is contained in one thread

92-94 SC300 Auto: Which trans just bolts up with no cutting?
95+ SC300 Auto: Which trans just bolts up with no cutting?

See the post above yours. The pre-95 Chaser/Soarer trans will drop right in with no issue to a pre-95 car.

Its very simple -

ALL MK3 R154 tranmissions require housing extensions.

92-95 - for direct drop in, a similar YM Chaser/Soarer is required. The same rule applies to 95+
