Replace SC300 with Jag XK8? Nah!

I've been thinking about replacing my 98 SC300 (165,000 miles), so I've been test driving various contenders. Here's a quick list of what I've driven so far:
2002 Lexus SC430 (50k miles, $22,000)
2003 Mercedes SLK320 (50k miles, $13,000)
2006 BMW 325i (60k miles, $18,000)
2008 Lexus IS250 AWD (40k miles, $25,000)
2006 BMW Z4 Coupe (26k miles, $22,000)
2003 Jaguar XK8 (42k miles, $20,000)
2002 Lexus SC430 (50k miles, $22,000)
2003 Mercedes SLK320 (50k miles, $13,000)
2006 BMW 325i (60k miles, $18,000)
2008 Lexus IS250 AWD (40k miles, $25,000)
2006 BMW Z4 Coupe (26k miles, $22,000)
2003 Jaguar XK8 (42k miles, $20,000)
The problem with your list is that you are listing cars that are not comparable in the first place.
- The SC430 is a completely unrelated platform and happens to be a coupe. I understand why it is in there though.
- The SLK....... really? I mean it's an econobox, shouldn't even be in the mix.
- The 325 is another econobox, should not be compared.
- The IS250 hasn't got a chance in hell of comparing build quality. IT'S ALMOST and econobox.
- The Z4 is a VERY small econobox, has no place being compared.
- The Jag was built under the ownership of ford... need I say more?
I guess you are just picking things with 2 doors, but that makes an irrelevant comparison that holds no water. If you want to make comparisons find more big I6/V6/V8 large coupes to compare to. The platform must be sized similar AND in the same class to really be compared.
The Jag was really the only comparison of similar platform and built during the Ford era so it's just rubbish.
A more proper comparison would have been the Mercedes SL. The SLK isn't even half of an SC. Between the two I'd have the SL, but I'd also spend enough to buy 4 sc's so are you buying for price or buying for what you'd want?

It's also a 2 door and has a V8 . That's close enough.

yea Kira they are getting pretty cheap and they are very tempting but they are priced accordingly.
At $7-8 thousand dollars to replace a tranny in an s500 benz it turned me off just a little bit lol.
To the person that made this thread, if your 57 years old and want style comfort , room with a bit of power theres really only one choice for you my friend, one of my favourite cars of all time the Lexus ls430!!!!!!!
stay away from benz, bmw and jag unless you really have money to just throw away, they do break down more often and parts prices are insane.

I see you like the LS430 too! In my opinion it is the coolest sedan ever, along with the S600. The ride is so smooth and everything about it is high quality.
Wow, so many responses but yet nobody thought of this car. Bmw 645ci. They come in drop or coupe and are the closest thing to an SC imo. They are"big" coupes it's what I like to call em. But the bmw has more room than the SC. I haven't heard anything bad about these motors as bmw used it for years throughout their lineup. Interior is far more ahead of the SC. Guarantee you, you won't look back
There is also the old school 8 series if you can find one. Like the 6 series it's large and pretty powerful. It's also very high tech and the repairs are expensive on the V12 models. If you want an old school car that really turns heads, an 850CSI would be a great choice, assuming you can find one.

The IS250 was to try out a V6 Lexus and see how it compared to the inline 6. Both the SC and the IS weigh around 3500lb, and HP/torque specs are close (225/210 for the SC300 vs 204/185 for the IS). But the IS is an absolute dog in comparison...
The SLK was a whim that happened to be on the lot, fun but clearly not a daily driver.
The Jag is the best, and I wouldn't be particularly bothered by the Ford connection if it was capable of going over 2000 miles without exploding, but clearly it is not.
Price is a certainly a factor... and bear in mind that all of these cars are priced between three and four times what I paid for my Lexus!
When I found my SC I wasn't sure what I was looking for. My main criteria was an inline four or six and a manual trans. I considered the auto trans a big negative, but it was love at first drive and I don't even miss having a manual. (I do still own a stick for winter duty - a 97 RAV4 2dr 4WD.)
I think what I've established is that a 14 year old SC300 is vastly superior to virtually any used car I can find, even at four times the price!

A Mercedes tranny will set you back $5-7K at a dealership, but they are pretty much bullet proof. The only weak link in the tranny is the coolant wicking up the wiring harness to the TCU, but thats it. Rebuilt trannys are under $2K.
But unless youre mechanically inclined, get a extended warranty with any german car incl Volkswagens.
Glad to see you kept the SC300. There is really nothing like it.
