Default Help Tabaka - Code 52 - Knock Sensor 95 SC300 5spd

Did a bit of searching but we don't have a detailed DIY for a knock sensor. I was on my way to work this morning and happen to see my Check engine light on a few minutes before arriving to the office. I checked codes using the TE1 - E1 paperclip method and it's lucky number 52 .

Is it common for these to go bad?

How much are knock sensors?

Should I buy a new sensor or is used ok?

Is it an easy DIY on a 2JZGE, or should I just bring it to a shop? Anyone in NoVa want to give a hand?

This car is a daily, should I stop driving it and get a rental car (which will cost me $100+ per day) until it's fixed?

History
My car just hit 145k. In the past 15k, under the hood I've replaced...

Timing belt, waterpump, plugs, wires, distributor, MAF, battery, starter, clutch fan, radiator, serp belt, power steering pump, and flushed all fluids using Toyota branded products.

Looks like it just came off the showroom floor under the hood. I haven't noticed any weird sounds, noises, smells, etc.

Please chime in and help your friend Tabaka out

I myself would just buy a brand new sensor, Sure it's more expensive, but who knows how much longer the old Used sensor may have before it starts to go bad itself.

On my MKIII when it still had a 2jge-T in it, I ended up tying both knock sensors, and never had an issue with it.

Since there are two knock sensors, which one should I change under the intake manifold for code #52.

Are the two identical?

Anyone know the answer to this? I too have this problem. However my car is throwing codes 52 and 55, which are both knock sensor fault codes --- Would this mean that both front and rear sensors are done?

they are the same part number. Before you go buy new ones check the wiring. They are notorious for getting very brittle around the connectors from heat cycling

if i were you i would check my ecu before my knock sensors... not often do those things go bad and the ecu could be a fault. i was thorwing the same code and multiple others, brought it the the toyota dealer and they advised i get my ecu rebuilt, from than on no problems electrically in my car.

Not common on sc300 but very common on Older toyota's in General. The wires become very brittle and i replace knock sensors if i even work on something near it. Def. do both...cause you dont wanna have to go back in and do it again

Yeah but you have an SC400 not a 300. Majority of the SC400 have ECU problems same goes with the 1jzgte.

A week later and my fuel pump went out. I replaced the fuel pump, reset the ECU, and never had a problem or threw this code again.

I had that same code on my 1jzgte.. my knock sensor was loose. I pushed it back in, reset the CEL and Its been fine for the past month. Once that CEL comes on the car goes into like a "safe" mode and doesnt perform to its fullest... atleast that was the situation with mine. Glad you got yours fixed

Thats good news tabaka, I don't think my sensors are at fault I checked em, wires are fine and the sensors are snug. I should just reset the ECU and see.

Did you ever change ur knock sensors? I still have this issue and I'm beginning to think it's because of the 12v bypass mod I did to the fuel pump. Did you do that Tabaka?

I did the 12V mod and changed the fuel pump. This happened in February and it's almost July and never had an issue again... so I think I'm in the clear.

My only issue is that I'm going to swap engines soon and need to extend the harness of course. I'm told that you shouldn't splice the knock sensor wires as it will have negative effects. I believe there is a few threads about this but I need to dig deeper.
