Yeah I kind of agree here. I get that it was a battle of the NA 6 cylinders but the M is a race prepped car, truthfully it should've been compared to the tt supra, the 300zx TT, and the VR4 if we were truly going against top performance 6 cylinders. Of course it would be completely unfair to the german

Back then when this article came out, the second gen M3 had just arrived. They had nothing to compare it to.
The Supra TT and 300ZX TT didnt meet the criteria (price) which was coupes that were $37-41K
Those cars (naturally aspirated) were considerable more expensive than the M3.
back then your dad would have mailed in a letter and complained that the comparison wasn't fair.
I would think a Mitsu 3000GT/Dodge Stealth would have been more apropriate to judge the other three cars, however this was the beginning when the publications began to favor BMW.
Hard to believe 15 years later, the M3 is double in price.

It's not just the price. Today's M3 is more like an M5. It's a great car but the 1-Series 135i/M is the closest we've had to an E30/E36 since the late 90's.
I have to say that the wingless Supra NA they picture in the article looks classic. Any stock exterior MKIV without the wing and rolling on the stock five-spokes is visually stunning to me. They just have a look about them from the factory.
The SC300 5-speed is a looker too but should have had the 400 front lip as standard to make it stand out more.
