A lot? That is a common misconception.

The VVT-i engines have a variable intake cam gear. Instead of putting an aftermarket cam gear that can only be set to a certain degree the ECU adjusts the stock cam gear to advance or retard the valve overlap.

The other noticeable difference is with the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) system. This means nothing if you do not plan on removing the stock throttle or decide on using a standalone computer.

Going turbo on either the 2JZ-GE or the 2JZ-GE VVT-i requires the exact same parts and the exact same amount of work.

sc300jz Rebuilding an engine is a judgment call you make after getting the engine. VVT-i is not junk but a worthwhile upgrade.
I am aware that my stock tranny will not hold much power, if i stay auto I am planning on eventually going with a built TT auto.
$3000 is not my total budget, but thats all I am spending on my SC for now

You can do a 1JZ-GTE R154 swap for that cost assuming you keep the stock differential. With the correct Supra twin turbo auto differential it might be a little above your budget.
